A8-5500 Details

Launched in October 2012, the AMD A8-5500 represents a mid-tier desktop processor from the Trinity era, designed to deliver integrated graphics performance alongside basic computing capabilities. While it is now considered outdated by modern standards—over a decade old—it was built on AMD's 32 nm process and features a quad-core design based on the Trinity architecture, with a base clock of 2.8 GHz and a turbo frequency of up to 3.46 GHz. Despite its age, the A8-5500 retains relevance in legacy systems and budget builds where discrete GPU options are limited. With a 35 W TDP and dual-channel DDR3 memory support up to 1866 MT/s, the chip strikes a balance between power efficiency and performance for light to moderate workloads. Its integrated Radeon HD 7560D graphics, while not suitable for modern gaming, supports up to two displays and offers basic multimedia and 3D acceleration for older applications.

The A8-5500's performance is best evaluated in the context of its time. In current benchmarking, it holds an overall score of 4299, ranking #1530 out of 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 4256 and a multicore score of 4364. These results place it just behind similarly aged dual- and quad-core processors like the Core i3-2100 and Phenom II X3 700e, while slightly ahead of older models such as the Core i3-6102E and Xeon E7-4830. While its single-core performance is modest compared to today’s standards, it holds a slight edge in multicore throughput due to its quad-core design and support for advanced instruction sets like AVX and AVX2. However, it falls far short of current high-end processors, which dominate the top 50 rankings with scores exceeding 7,000 in multicore performance.

Despite its age, the A8-5500 benefits from a range of modern features, including support for hardware virtualization, AES encryption, and a wide array of x86-64 extensions such as SSE4.1, SSE4.2, and FMA3. These capabilities enhance its versatility in virtualized environments and for lightweight multimedia tasks. Its 4 MB L2 cache and 0.122 MiB L1 cache, though limited by today’s standards, were adequate for its intended use cases at launch. The processor is packaged in a BGA1288 and PGA988 socket, compatible with motherboards based on the A88X, A85X, and A75 chipsets, which are now rare in new systems.

In summary, the AMD A8-5500 is best suited for legacy desktops, embedded systems, or as a replacement in older machines where performance and power efficiency are prioritized over raw computational power. While it no longer competes with modern CPUs in terms of single-core or multicore performance, its integrated graphics and low TDP make it a viable option in niche applications. As of March 2026, it remains a relic of a bygone era—useful for basic computing tasks but far removed from the capabilities of contemporary processors.
