Core i3-4340 Details

As of March 2026, the Intel Core i3-4340 remains a relic of the Haswell era, launched in September 2013 as part of Intel's mainstream desktop lineup. While it is now over a decade old, the processor still holds a modest place in the broader CPU landscape, particularly for users maintaining older systems or requiring basic computing capabilities. Built on a 22 nm process and featuring the Haswell microarchitecture, the i3-4340 was designed for entry-level performance with a focus on integrated graphics and power efficiency. Its 54 W TDP and FCLGA1150 socket make it compatible with a wide range of older motherboards, though it is no longer supported in modern platforms.

The Core i3-4340 features two physical cores with Hyper-Threading, effectively providing four threads for improved multitasking. It operates at a base frequency of 3.6 GHz, with a turbo frequency capped at 3.2 GHz—though this is limited by the processor's design and the lack of modern thermal headroom. The chip includes 4 MB of L3 cache and supports dual-channel DDR3 memory at speeds up to 1600 MHz, with a maximum memory capacity of 32 GB. It uses a PCIe 3.0 interface for expansion and supports Intel's integrated HD Graphics 4600, which can drive up to three displays at a max frequency of 1150 MHz and shares up to 2 GB of system memory.

Despite its age, the i3-4340 supports a robust set of technologies, including AVX, AVX2, AES-NI, and Intel's virtualization extensions (VT-x, VT-d). These features enable it to run modern operating systems and virtualized workloads, albeit at reduced efficiency compared to contemporary CPUs. The processor also includes Intel's Enhanced SpeedStep Technology (EIST) for dynamic power management, making it suitable for low-power desktops and small form-factor systems.

In benchmark testing, the Core i3-4340 achieves an Overall Score of 5106, placing it at #786 out of 2060 processors. Its Singlecore Score of 5411 ranks it #631, indicating that it still holds a competitive edge in single-threaded performance for its era. However, its Multicore Score of 4649 places it at #1033, revealing a significant performance gap in multi-threaded workloads compared to modern processors. While it outperforms some older Intel and AMD CPUs in the same benchmark range, it falls well behind current-generation offerings such as the Ryzen 9 9950X3D or Core Ultra 9 285K, which score over 8,000 in single-core and exceed 12,000 in multicore.

The i3-4340 is best suited for basic office applications, web browsing, and media playback in older systems. It is not ideal for gaming, content creation, or intensive multitasking due to its limited core count and outdated architecture. For users upgrading from even older platforms, it may offer a noticeable performance boost, but for new builds, it is far from optimal. In summary, the Core i3-4340 is a legacy processor that remains functional in niche scenarios but is overshadowed by the vast improvements in performance, efficiency, and features seen in CPUs from the last five years.
