Core i7-640M Details

For users seeking a capable mobile processor from the early 2010s, the Intel Core i7-640M remains a noteworthy example of Intel's Arrandale architecture. Launched in September 2010, this CPU was designed for high-performance laptops and represented a significant step forward in mobile computing at the time. Built on a 32 nm process and featuring a 35 W TDP, the Core i7-640M offered strong performance for its era while maintaining efficient power consumption. Though now over a decade old, its design and performance metrics still provide insight into the evolution of mobile processors.

The Core i7-640M is based on the Arrandale microarchitecture and features two physical cores with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, enabling four simultaneous threads. It operates at a base frequency of 2.8 GHz and can boost up to 3.467 GHz depending on workload, delivering a balanced mix of single-core and multi-threaded performance. With a 3.815 MiB L3 cache and 0.244 MiB of L2 cache, it provided robust data access capabilities for its time. The processor uses a dual-channel DDR3 memory interface, supporting speeds up to 1066 MT/s and delivering a memory bandwidth of 17.1 GB/s. It is packaged in a BGA1288 format and is compatible with chipsets such as PM55, HM55, QM57, and HM57.

Integrated graphics are provided by Intel's HD Graphics (Ironlake) solution, though availability depends on the motherboard. This GPU supports modern features for its generation, including hardware virtualization through Intel VT-x and VT-d, which enhances virtual machine performance. The processor also supports AES-NI, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, and EIST, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of software and power management needs. Despite its age, the Core i7-640M remains a capable performer in legacy systems.

In benchmark testing, the Core i7-640M achieves an overall score of 4365, ranking #1450 out of 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 4365 (#1424) and a multicore score of 4365 (#1541). These results place it just above several modern low-power and budget processors while falling short of contemporary high-end CPUs. The processor competes closely with models like the A8-3510MX and Core i7-620M, yet trails behind more recent offerings such as the Core i7-3537U and Phenom II X3 700e. Its performance is particularly strong in single-threaded tasks, where it ranks among mid-tier processors from the same generation.

As of March 2026, the Core i7-640M is best suited for legacy systems, light productivity tasks, or retro computing projects. While it no longer competes with modern CPUs in raw performance, its integration of key features like Hyper-Threading and virtualization support made it a solid choice for its time. For users maintaining older laptops or exploring historical hardware, the Core i7-640M offers a reliable and efficient mobile processor from the early era of multi-core mobile computing.
