Core i3-2100 Details

Built on Intel's Sandy Bridge microarchitecture and manufactured on a 32 nm process, the Core i3-2100 is a legacy desktop processor launched in February 2011. As of March 2026, it is over 14 years old, placing it firmly in the category of outdated consumer hardware. Despite its age, the Core i3-2100 remains notable for its role in bringing integrated graphics and hyper-threading to mainstream entry-level desktops. Designed for the FCLGA1155 socket, this dual-core processor features Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), allowing it to handle four threads simultaneously, and operates at a base frequency of 3.1 GHz with a turbo boost of 3.2 GHz. The chip includes 3 MB of L3 cache, 0.061 MiB of L1 cache, and 0.244 MiB of L2 cache, supporting dual-channel DDR3 memory up to 1333 MT/s with a maximum system memory capacity of 32 GB. Its 65 W TDP reflects a balanced power profile for its era, making it suitable for basic computing and light multitasking.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 GPU provides modest visual performance, capable of driving up to two displays at a maximum frequency of 1100 MHz and a base frequency of 850 MHz. While far behind modern integrated solutions, it was adequate for office work, web browsing, and standard-definition video playback in its time. The processor supports a wide range of Intel technologies, including AES-NI, AVX2, and VT-x, enabling hardware virtualization and improved encryption performance. It also features Intel's Enhanced SpeedStep Technology (EIST) for power efficiency and Secure Key for enhanced security. However, the locked multiplier limits overclocking potential, and its 32 nm process, while advanced in 2011, is now obsolete by current standards.

In benchmark testing, the Core i3-2100 scores 4483 overall, ranking #1300 out of 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 4564 (#1237) and a multicore score of 4362 (#1546). While these scores are impressive for its time, they now place it well below modern CPUs, even in entry-level segments. The single-core performance is relatively strong for its generation, outperforming several modern low-power processors like the Pentium Silver N5000 and the Core i5-580M. However, its multicore performance lags significantly behind even mid-range current offerings, with a large gap to the top performers—only 4% of the overall score of the highest-ranked Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX. This indicates that the Core i3-2100's primary strength lies in single-threaded tasks, though it is severely limited in multi-threaded workloads.

Given its age and performance profile, the Core i3-2100 is no longer suitable for modern applications such as video editing, gaming, or software development. It may still function in legacy systems or as a low-cost upgrade for basic office use, but it lacks the features and performance needed for today’s computing demands. As of March 2026, it stands as a historical artifact of Intel’s transition toward more efficient, multi-threaded designs, offering a glimpse into the evolution of consumer processors over the past decade.
