Intel Core i5-580M Details

Ranking #1533 of 2060 in overall performance, the Intel Core i5-580M delivers a modest benchmark result that reflects its age and design intent. Released during a transitional period in Intel’s mobile processor lineup, this CPU was designed for mainstream laptops in the early 2010s, offering a balance of efficiency and integrated graphics performance. With a 35 W TDP and a 32 nm manufacturing process, the i5-580M was built for power efficiency, making it suitable for thin-and-light notebooks rather than high-performance systems. Despite its age, the processor remains a functional choice for basic computing tasks, web browsing, and multimedia playback.

The Core i5-580M is based on the Westmere microarchitecture, an evolution of the Nehalem design, and is part of the Arrandale family. It features two physical cores with four threads enabled via Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology, allowing it to handle multithreaded workloads more efficiently than non-SMT designs. Clock speeds range from a base of 2.67 GHz to a turbo boost of 3.33 GHz on a single core, with a maximum of 3.07 GHz on two cores. These frequencies, while impressive for their time, are now significantly outpaced by modern processors. The CPU includes 3 MiB of L3 cache, 0.5 MiB of L2 cache, and 0.125 MiB of L1 cache, providing adequate data throughput for its era.

Integrated into the same package is the Intel HD Graphics (Ironlake) GPU, which operates at a base frequency of 500 MHz and can boost up to 766 MHz. It features 12 execution units and supports up to two display outputs, making it suitable for basic video playback and light gaming. While not capable of modern gaming demands, it was sufficient for office applications and casual multimedia use. The processor supports DDR3-1066 memory across two channels, with a maximum capacity of 8 GB and a memory bandwidth of 15.88 GiB/s, a reasonable limit for its time.

Despite its limitations, the i5-580M supports a range of advanced features, including Intel Turbo Boost 1.0, Enhanced SpeedStep, AES-NI, and Intel VT-x for virtualization. It also includes Intel vPro technology, which adds remote management and security features for enterprise environments. However, the lack of ECC memory support limits its use in high-reliability computing.

As of March 2026, the Core i5-580M remains a legacy device, with performance that is far behind today’s standards. Its single-core score of 4242 and multicore score of 4376 place it among older processors, though it still outperforms some low-end modern Celeron and Pentium models in specific use cases. It is best suited for light-duty tasks in refurbished or legacy systems, rather than as a primary processor in new builds.
