Phenom II X4 820 Details

As of March 2026, the AMD Phenom II X4 820 remains a relic of the late 2000s, having been released in September 2009. While it once represented a strong mid-to-high-end desktop offering, its performance today places it far behind modern processors. With an overall score of 4220, the Phenom II X4 820 ranks #1643 out of 2060 processors in the benchmark database, highlighting its obsolescence in the current market. It sits just ahead of the Core i5-450M and the Core 2 Duo P9600, both of which are also long out of production, but trails significantly behind even budget-oriented modern CPUs like the A6-9200 and Core i3-7100U.

The processor is built on AMD's Deneb microarchitecture, fabricated on a 45 nm process by GlobalFoundries, and features four cores operating at a base frequency of 2.8 GHz. It includes 4 MB of L3 cache, 0.488 MiB of L2 cache, and 0.122 MiB of L1 cache, with support for dual-channel DDR3 memory at up to 1333 MT/s. The chip operates at a TDP of 95 W, which was considered high for its time and requires robust cooling solutions, especially under sustained loads. It uses the Socket AM3 interface and supports ECC memory, a feature beneficial in server and workstation environments, although the CPU itself is not marketed for such use.

Despite lacking integrated graphics, the Phenom II X4 820 can support graphics functionality through certain chipsets that include onboard GPU capabilities. It supports a range of technologies including SSE2, SSE3, SSE4a, and AMD-V for hardware virtualization, along with 3DNow! and Advanced Bit Manipulation instructions. However, it does not support simultaneous multithreading, meaning each core handles only one thread, limiting its efficiency in multithreaded applications.

In single-core performance, the Phenom II X4 820 scores 4092, placing it #1683 in the rankings. This indicates that while it was competitive for its era, it falls behind modern processors that benefit from architectural advancements and higher clock speeds. Its multicore score of 4413 ranks it #1427, showing that its four-core design still provides some advantage in multithreaded workloads compared to many older dual-core CPUs, though it is outpaced by contemporary quad- and hexa-core processors.

When compared to the top-tier processors of 2026, such as the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX with a score over 9,000, the Phenom II X4 820 appears as a historical artifact. It may still find niche use in legacy systems, retro builds, or educational environments where understanding older hardware is valuable. However, for any modern computing task—whether productivity, gaming, or content creation—it is no longer competitive and should be considered obsolete.
