A8-3820 Details

As of March 2026, the AMD A8-3820 remains a relic of the early 2010s, representing a transitional era in desktop computing where integrated graphics and multi-core efficiency began to gain prominence. Launched in December 2011, this processor is now over 14 years old, placing it firmly in the category of legacy hardware. While it was once a compelling option for budget-conscious users needing basic multitasking and media playback, its performance today is significantly outdated compared to modern CPUs.

The A8-3820 is built on AMD’s Llano architecture, fabricated on a 32 nm process by GlobalFoundries. It features four cores and four threads, operating at a base frequency of 2.5 GHz with a turbo boost up to 2.8 GHz. Despite its age, the chip integrates a Radeon HD 6550D GPU, which, while modest by today’s standards, offers basic graphics acceleration and support for multiple displays. The processor supports DDR3 memory at up to 1866 MT/s via a dual-channel interface and is compatible with the Socket FM1 platform, which has long since been phased out.

In terms of performance, the A8-3820 achieves an overall Passmark score of 4244, ranking it #1605 out of 2060 processors. Its single-core score is 4142, placing it #1640, and its multicore score is 4396, ranking #1466. These results indicate that while the A8-3820 can still handle light productivity tasks and older software, it falls far behind contemporary processors in both single-threaded and multi-threaded workloads. For instance, it trails the top-ranked Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX by a staggering margin of over 9000 points in overall score.

Despite its limitations, the A8-3820's 65 W TDP reflects an emphasis on power efficiency for its time, and its integrated GPU allows it to function in systems without a discrete graphics card. However, with no support for modern instruction sets like AVX2 or AVX-512, and lacking features such as ECC memory support, the A8-3820 is no longer suitable for modern computing demands. It remains a viable option only for retro builds, educational purposes, or in niche scenarios where legacy compatibility is required.

In conclusion, the AMD A8-3820 is a product of its time—a capable budget processor in the early 2010s but now obsolete in the current computing landscape. Its real-world performance is constrained by outdated architecture, limited cache (1 MB L2 per core and 0.122 MiB L1), and a lack of support for modern technologies. While it may still run basic operating systems and applications, it is not recommended for any new builds or demanding workloads.
