A8-3850 Details

Built on AMD's Llano architecture and fabricated on a 32 nm process, the A8-3850 is a desktop processor that was launched in June 2011. Despite its age, it remains notable for integrating a discrete-level graphics solution into a single chip, making it one of the early examples of a true APU. The A8-3850 features a quad-threaded design with two physical cores, clocked at a base frequency of 2.3 GHz and capable of boosting to 2.48 GHz under load. It operates on the Socket FM1 platform and is designed for mainstream desktop systems, offering a modest balance of performance and power efficiency. The chip includes 1 MB of L2 cache per core and supports dual-channel DDR3 memory up to 1866 MT/s, though its memory bandwidth is limited to 29.9 GB/s in practice. With a TDP of 100 W, the A8-3850 requires adequate cooling, particularly in densely packed systems, but its power consumption is reasonable for its era.

The A8-3850 integrates the Radeon HD 6550D GPU, which runs at a base frequency of 300 MHz and can boost to 950 MHz. This GPU supports up to three displays and offers decent integrated graphics performance for basic multimedia and light gaming, especially considering the processor's age. It is manufactured by GlobalFoundries using 1.178 billion transistors, a significant number for a 32 nm design at the time. The processor supports a range of technologies including SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX2, AES-NI, and AMD-V virtualization, which enhance performance in multimedia, encryption, and virtualized environments. However, it lacks SMT (Simultaneous Multithreading), meaning each core handles only one thread, limiting its ability to scale in multithreaded workloads.

In benchmark testing, the A8-3850 achieves an Overall Score of 4277, placing it at #1552 out of 2060 processors in the dataset. Its Singlecore Score is 4189, ranking #1589, while its Multicore Score stands at 4410, placing it at #1431. These results indicate that the A8-3850 is competitive with mid-tier mobile processors from the early 2010s but falls well behind modern CPUs. It performs slightly better than some low-end Intel Core i5 and AMD FX models from the same period, such as the Core i5-4310U and FX-7700K, but trails behind more powerful contemporaries like the A10-6700T and Athlon II X3 440. Its multicore performance is its strongest category, though it still lags significantly behind today's top-tier processors.

As of March 2026, the A8-3850 is best suited for legacy systems or entry-level desktops where integrated graphics and low cost are priorities. While it no longer competes with modern processors in terms of raw performance or efficiency, it remains a viable option for basic productivity tasks, media playback, and light software development. Its position near the bottom of the rankings underscores the rapid advancement in CPU technology over the past decade, but it still holds historical significance as a pioneer in the integration of CPU and GPU technologies.
