Celeron 3955U Details

The Intel Celeron 3955U is a budget-oriented mobile processor from Intel's Skylake-U lineup, designed for entry-level laptops and thin-and-light systems where power efficiency and cost are prioritized over raw performance. Released in 2016, this chip is now over seven years old, placing it firmly in the category of legacy hardware. While it no longer competes with modern processors in terms of speed or feature set, it remains a functional option for basic computing tasks such as web browsing, office applications, and light multimedia consumption.

Based on the Skylake microarchitecture and fabricated on a 14 nm process, the Celeron 3955U features two cores and two threads, running at a base frequency of 2.0 GHz with no turbo boost capability. It includes 2 MiB of L3 cache, 0.5 MiB of L2 cache, and 0.125 MiB of L1 cache, split into 64 KiB for data and 64 KiB for instructions. The processor operates at a TDP of 15 W, with a configurable down to 10 W, making it suitable for low-power devices. It supports DDR4-2133, LPDDR3-1866, and DDR3L-1600 memory across two channels, with a maximum memory capacity of 32 GiB and a peak bandwidth of 31.79 GiB/s. The chip is packaged in a BGA-1356 format and uses the FCBGA-1356 socket.

Integrated graphics are provided by the Intel HD Graphics 510, which includes 12 execution units and a maximum frequency of 900 MHz. This GPU supports up to three displays and can handle basic video playback and light gaming, though it is not suited for modern 3D applications. The processor also supports a range of Intel technologies, including Intel VT-x and VT-d virtualization, AES-NI encryption, AVX2, and Intel Enhanced SpeedStep for power management. Despite its age, the Celeron 3955U retains support for 64-bit computing, MMX, SSE, and other x86-64 extensions.

In benchmark testing, the Celeron 3955U achieves an overall score of 4278, placing it at #1551 out of 2060 processors in the PassMark rankings. Its single-core score of 4243 ranks it #1534, while its multicore score of 4331 lands at #1646. These results indicate that the processor performs roughly in line with mid-range CPUs from the mid-2010s, such as the Core i3-2370M and Phenom II X2 555, but trails significantly behind current-generation hardware. In the top 50 overall performance list, the Celeron 3955U is far from competitive, with the highest-ranked processor scoring over twice as much.

Given its age and modest performance, the Celeron 3955U is best suited for users who need a low-cost, energy-efficient system for basic computing tasks. It is not appropriate for demanding applications such as video editing, gaming, or virtualization. As of March 2026, this processor serves as a reminder of a bygone era in mobile computing, where performance was traded for affordability and battery life.
