Pentium G840 Details

The Intel Pentium G840, launched in May 2011, is a desktop processor rooted in the Sandy Bridge architecture and built on a 32 nm process. Despite being over a decade old, it remains a relevant entry in the low-end market segment for basic computing tasks. With a 2.8 GHz base clock and a turbo frequency of 3.0 GHz, the G840 features two cores and two threads, operating under a 65 W TDP and using the FCLGA1155 socket. It supports DDR3 memory at up to 1333 MHz in dual-channel mode, with a maximum memory capacity of 32 GB and a memory bandwidth of 21 GB/s.

The processor integrates Intel HD Graphics, which runs at a base frequency of 850 MHz and can boost up to 1.1 GHz, supporting up to two displays. It includes a 3 MB L3 cache, 0.061 MiB of L1 cache, and 0.244 MiB of L2 cache, contributing to its modest but functional performance. The G840 supports modern instruction sets such as AVX, AVX2, AES-NI, and Intel’s virtualization technologies, including VT-x and VT-d, making it suitable for light virtualization and encryption workloads.

In benchmark testing, the Pentium G840 achieves a multicore score of 4344, placing it at #1598 out of 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 4415, ranking #1377. Its overall score of 4387 ranks it #1418 in the broader comparison. While it trails behind modern high-performance CPUs, it holds its own against older dual-core processors like the Celeron G550 and Phenom II P940. In the top 50 lists, it is notably outpaced by contemporary flagship CPUs such as the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX and Core Ultra 9 285K, which score over 9,000 in multicore performance.

Given its age and limited core count, the G840 is best suited for basic office applications, web browsing, and light multimedia use. It offers a cost-effective upgrade path for older systems that do not require high computational throughput. As of March 2026, it remains a niche option for users prioritizing power efficiency and affordability over raw performance.
