Core i3-5010U Details

As of March 2026, the Intel Core i3-5010U remains a relic of the mid-2010s mobile computing era, representing a low-power, entry-level processor designed for budget laptops and ultrabooks. Launched in March 2015, it belongs to the Broadwell-U family, built on Intel’s 14 nm process node, and was positioned as a mainstream mobile option with integrated graphics and power efficiency in mind. While it is now considered outdated, its 15 W TDP and dual-core architecture with Hyper-Threading still made it a viable choice for light productivity and media consumption during its time.

The Core i3-5010U features two physical cores capable of handling four threads thanks to Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology, operating at a base frequency of 2.1 GHz with no advertised turbo boost. It includes 3 MB of L3 cache, a modest L2 cache of 0.244 MiB, and a smaller L1 cache of 0.061 MiB, reflecting the efficiency-focused design of the Broadwell generation. The processor uses a dual-channel DDR3L/DDR4 memory interface, supporting up to 16 GB of memory at speeds up to 1600 MT/s, and communicates via PCIe 2.0 with a total of 12 lanes available from the CPU. It is packaged in the FC-BGA1168 socket, typical for mobile platforms of that period.

Integrated graphics are provided by the Intel HD Graphics 5500, which runs at a base frequency of 300 MHz and can boost up to 900 MHz. This GPU supports up to three displays and is capable of handling basic video playback and light gaming, though it lacks the power for modern applications. The processor supports a wide range of Intel technologies, including AES-NI, SSE4.1/4.2, AVX, and virtualization features such as VT-x and VT-d, making it suitable for older enterprise and educational environments.

In benchmark testing, the Core i3-5010U achieves an overall score of 4390, placing it at #1414 out of 2060 CPUs in the database. Its single-core performance scores 4427, ranking #1362, while its multicore score of 4335 places it at #1626. These results indicate that while the CPU can handle basic tasks, its performance is now significantly behind modern processors. It is outperformed by many contemporary mobile and desktop CPUs, including the Ryzen 5 9600X and Core Ultra 7 265K, and even older mainstream chips like the Core i5-4210Y and Pentium G2010.

Despite its age, the Core i3-5010U remains a testament to Intel’s efforts to deliver capable performance in a low-power envelope. While it no longer competes with today’s standards, it still serves niche roles in legacy systems, educational institutions, or as a replacement in older devices where power efficiency and cost are more critical than raw performance.
