Sempron 140 Details

For users seeking basic computing performance with integrated graphics and low power consumption, the AMD Sempron 140 offers a modest entry point into the desktop processor landscape. Released in July 2009, this processor is now over 14 years old, placing it well into the legacy category. Despite its age, it remains a functional option for light productivity tasks and general-purpose use in older systems. Built on AMD's Sargas architecture at a 65 nm process node, the Sempron 140 features a dual-core design with four threads, achieved through simultaneous multithreading support. It operates at a base clock of 2.2 GHz and can boost to 2.7 GHz, with a TDP of 65 W, making it suitable for systems with standard cooling solutions.

The processor supports DDR3 800 memory in a dual-channel configuration, with a maximum capacity of 8 GB and a memory bandwidth of 12.8 GB/s. It includes 0.122 MiB of L1 cache and 0.954 MiB of L2 cache, which is shared between cores. The integrated GPU, labeled as HD Graphics, runs at 166 MHz base frequency with a burst frequency of 500 MHz and supports up to two displays. While the GPU is not powerful by modern standards, it allows for basic video playback and light graphical tasks when paired with compatible chipsets.

In terms of supported features, the Sempron 140 includes a range of instruction sets such as MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX2, AES, and x86-64, ensuring compatibility with a wide variety of software. It also supports hardware virtualization through AMD-V and includes power-saving technologies like EIST and TXT. The processor uses the LGA775 socket, which was common during its era, and supports PCI-Express 2.0 for connectivity.

Benchmark results show the Sempron 140 achieving an overall score of 4030, ranking #1860 out of 2060 processors. Its single-core score is 3900, placing it at #1830, while the multicore score reaches 4226, ranking #1969. These results place it behind modern low-power processors and even older dual-core designs like the Core 2 Duo P9300 and Phenom II X4 900e. However, it outperforms some of the more basic processors in its class, such as the E1-1200 and A4-1250.

As of March 2026, the AMD Sempron 140 is best suited for legacy systems, basic office workloads, or as a replacement in low-demand environments. Its performance is no longer competitive in the modern computing landscape, but it remains a viable option for users who prioritize cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency over raw performance.
