Xeon X5472 Details

The Intel Xeon X5472 ranks just behind several mainstream processors in multicore performance, with an Overall Score of 4325 placing it at #1489 of 2060 in the benchmark database. It closely trails the Athlon II X4 605e and Core M 5Y51, both of which achieve marginally higher scores, while falling slightly behind the Xeon E5520 and Xeon E5462 in single-core and overall performance. Released in a bygone era of computing, the Xeon X5472 is a 45 nm processor built on the Nehalem microarchitecture, designed for server and workstation use, and features a 120 W TDP, making it a power-hungry component even by today’s standards. Its four cores operate at a base frequency of 3.0 GHz, with a turbo frequency of 2.48 GHz, and support for Hyper-Threading enables it to handle two threads per core, resulting in an 8-thread configuration. The CPU is socketed into LGA771, a platform largely obsolete in modern systems, and is compatible with DDR3-1333 memory, limited to two channels and a maximum capacity of 32 GB.

Despite its age, the Xeon X5472 includes a suite of advanced features aimed at enterprise environments, such as ECC memory support, Intel vPro, VT-x, VT-d, and EPT for virtualization, along with AES-NI for encryption and AVX2 for enhanced vector processing. It also supports Intel's Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) and Secure Key, providing additional security layers. Integrated graphics come in the form of Intel HD Graphics, capable of driving up to three displays with a maximum GPU frequency of 1.05 GHz and a base frequency of 350 MHz, with up to 1.7 GB of shared memory. The processor's PCIe 3.0 support allows for flexible configurations, including up to 16 lanes of PCIe bandwidth.

In benchmark tests, the Xeon X5472 achieves a Singlecore Score of 4286 and a Multicore Score of 4384, with the latter indicating it is slightly more capable in multi-threaded workloads than in single-threaded performance. While it ranks near the middle of the pack among older CPUs, its performance is significantly outpaced by modern processors, as seen in the top 50 lists where the highest-scoring CPUs exceed 12,000 in multicore performance and over 8,700 in single-core. The Xeon X5472 is best suited for legacy systems, low-demand virtualization tasks, or as a component in older server environments where compatibility with legacy hardware is required. As of March 2026, it remains a niche option, primarily relevant for systems still reliant on LGA771 architecture and older software stacks.
