Core i7-950 Details

The Intel Core i7-950, launched in June 2009, stands as a relic of the early Core i7 era, now more than 14 years old. Despite its age, it remains a benchmark reference point for processors from the Bloomfield generation. Built on a 45 nm process and featuring a 130 W TDP, the i7-950 was designed for high-performance desktop systems using the FCLGA1366 socket. With four cores and eight threads enabled via Hyper-Threading, it delivers a base clock of 3.06 GHz and a turbo frequency of up to 3.33 GHz, supported by 8 MB of L3 cache and 0.061 MiB of L1 and 0.244 MiB of L2 cache. It supports triple-channel DDR3 memory up to 24 GB and offers a maximum memory bandwidth of 25.6 GB/s.

The Core i7-950 lacks integrated graphics, requiring a discrete GPU for display output, and relies on a PCI Express 2.0 interface for connectivity. It supports a broad range of Intel technologies, including SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX2, AES-NI, HT, and Intel VT-x, making it a capable platform for its time. However, its performance today is modest compared to modern CPUs. In Passmark benchmarks, the i7-950 scores 4602 overall, placing it at #1188 among 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 4561 (#1238) and a multicore score of 4664 (#1013).

In today’s context, the i7-950 is positioned far behind contemporary offerings. It trails slightly behind modern mainstream chips like the Core i3-7020U and the Core i5-5200U, both of which are more efficient and offer better single-thread performance despite lower clock speeds. The processor is outpaced in both single- and multicore performance by nearly every modern CPU, including those in the top 50 lists, where even entry-level Ryzen and Core models now dominate. Its strongest performance category is multicore, where it ranks just above the Xeon X5560 and Xeon X5570, but still falls short of the most capable modern processors.

As of March 2026, the Core i7-950 is not suitable for modern workloads such as gaming, content creation, or AI applications. Its high power consumption and lack of modern features limit its relevance. However, it remains a notable example of Intel’s early 2000s desktop performance strategy and may still serve in legacy systems or retro builds where compatibility with older hardware is required. For new systems, it is vastly outclassed by current-generation CPUs in both performance and efficiency.
