Atom N455 Details

The Intel Atom N455, launched in June 2010, represents an early iteration of Intel's low-power mobile processor lineup, designed for ultra-compact and energy-efficient devices such as netbooks and entry-level laptops. Built on a 45 nm process and based on the Pineview microarchitecture, the N455 is a single-core processor with a base clock of 1.66 GHz, capable of reaching up to 1.86 GHz in turbo mode. Despite its age, the chip remains notable for its extremely low thermal design power (TDP) of just 6.5 watts, making it ideal for systems where power efficiency and passive cooling are priorities.

The N455 leverages Intel's Hyper-Threading technology to support two threads, effectively doubling its concurrency at the software level. It features 512 KB of L2 cache and supports DDR2 and DDR3 memory types, with a maximum capacity of 2 GB and a memory bandwidth of 6.4 GB/s. The integrated GMA 3150 graphics engine operates at up to 756 MHz and supports up to two displays, enabling basic multimedia playback and light graphical tasks. While the GPU lacks modern features like DirectX 12 or hardware video decoding, it remains sufficient for office applications and web browsing.

In terms of performance, the Atom N455 holds a PassMark Overall Score of 3956, ranking it #1925 out of 2060 processors in the database. Its Singlecore Score of 3772 places it just above the lower tier of older CPUs, while its Multicore Score of 4231 indicates limited scalability due to its single-core design. When compared to contemporaries like the Atom N450 and Celeron N2840, the N455 holds a modest lead in performance, though it trails significantly behind modern processors. In the broader context of the top 50 CPUs, the N455 falls far short of high-end offerings such as the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX or Core Ultra 9 285K, which achieve over 9,000 in overall score.

The N455 supports a wide array of Intel technologies, including AES-NI, VT-x virtualization, and EIST for power management, though it lacks support for newer instruction sets like SSE4.2 or AVX2. Its socket is FC-BGA559, and it is packaged in a BGA format, meaning it is not user-upgradable. Given its release over a decade ago, the N455 is now obsolete for modern computing needs but remains relevant in niche applications such as embedded systems, thin clients, or legacy hardware maintenance.

As of March 2026, the Atom N455 serves as a reminder of Intel’s early efforts in creating low-power mobile computing solutions. While it offers excellent energy efficiency and basic functionality, its performance is no longer competitive in any mainstream use case. It is best suited for environments where power consumption and cost are more critical than processing power, such as in older educational devices or industrial automation systems.
