Core i5-8400T Details

Built on Intel's Coffee Lake microarchitecture and fabricated on a 14 nm process, the Core i5-8400T is a low-power desktop processor designed for energy-efficient performance. Launched in April 2018, it represents an older generation of Intel's Core i5 lineup, and while it is no longer at the forefront of performance, it remains relevant for basic computing tasks and embedded systems. With a TDP of just 35 W, the i5-8400T is optimized for systems where thermal and power constraints are a priority, such as compact PCs or office workstations.

The processor features six cores and six threads, operating at a base frequency of 1.7 GHz with a maximum turbo frequency of 3.3 GHz when running a single core. This boost capability allows it to handle demanding workloads more efficiently than its base frequency might suggest. It supports dual-channel DDR4-2666 memory and is paired with the UHD Graphics 630 integrated GPU, which runs at 350 MHz and can boost up to 1.05 GHz. The GPU supports up to three displays and is suitable for light multimedia use, but not for modern gaming or intensive graphics work.

The i5-8400T is equipped with a 9 MB L3 cache and 1.5 MB of L2 cache, with 0.188 MB each of L1 instruction and data caches, contributing to efficient data access. It uses the LGA-1151 socket and supports Intel's 300 series chipsets, making it compatible with a range of mainstream motherboards from its era. The processor includes advanced features such as Intel's Turbo Boost 2.0, Intel VT-x and VT-d virtualization, AES-NI encryption, and AVX/AVX2 instruction sets, enabling it to perform well in virtualized environments and compute-heavy applications.

In benchmark testing, the Core i5-8400T achieves an overall score of 5250, placing it at #657 among 2060 processors. Its single-core score of 5384 ranks it #659, indicating strong performance in applications that rely on high clock speeds. The multicore score of 5049 places it at #606, showing solid multi-threaded capabilities for its class. While it is outperformed by modern processors, it competes favorably with other low-power desktop CPUs like the Ryzen 3 4100 and Core i7-8705G.

As of March 2026, the Core i5-8400T remains a viable option for users seeking a reliable, low-power CPU for office productivity, media playback, and light content creation. It is not suited for gaming or high-end computing, but its efficiency and integration make it a practical choice for small form factor systems or servers where power consumption is a concern.
