Core i7-4790 Details

Built on Intel's Haswell microarchitecture and manufactured using a 22 nm process, the Core i7-4790 is a desktop processor that was launched in May 2014. As of early 2026, this represents a nearly decade-old design, placing it firmly in the legacy category for modern computing. Despite its age, the i7-4790 remains notable for its balanced performance and integrated graphics, making it a relevant reference point in the evolution of Intel’s mainstream CPU lineup. With a 64-bit architecture and support for modern instruction sets, the processor is designed for the FCLGA1150 socket and delivers a base frequency of 3.6 GHz, with a turbo boost up to 4.0 GHz when workload demands allow.

The Core i7-4790 features four cores and eight threads thanks to Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology, allowing it to handle multi-threaded workloads efficiently. It includes 0.061 MiB of L1 cache, 0.244 MiB of L2 cache, and a substantial 7.629 MiB of L3 cache, which helps maintain low latency during intensive operations. The processor supports dual-channel DDR3 memory at speeds up to 1600 MT/s, with a maximum system memory capacity of 32 GB. It is built with 1.4 billion transistors and operates at a thermal design power (TDP) of 84 W, requiring adequate cooling for sustained performance.

Integrated into the i7-4790 is Intel HD Graphics 4600, a graphics solution capable of up to 1200 MHz burst frequency and supporting three displays simultaneously. While not suitable for modern gaming or high-resolution video editing, this GPU provides basic graphical capabilities for office use, media playback, and light productivity tasks. The processor also supports a range of advanced technologies, including AVX, AVX2, AES-NI, and Intel VT-x for virtualization, as well as FMA3 and BMI1/BMI2 for enhanced computational performance.

In benchmark testing, the Core i7-4790 achieves an overall score of 5303, placing it at #617 out of 2060 processors in the overall ranking. It scores 5545 in single-core performance, ranking #521, and 4939 in multicore performance, ranking #687. These results indicate that while the processor still holds its own in single-threaded applications, its multicore performance is outpaced by nearly every modern CPU, even budget-tier models. It competes closely with processors like the Core i5-9500T and Core i7-4770T but trails behind newer Intel and AMD offerings in both single- and multi-core performance.

Given its age and performance profile, the Core i7-4790 is best suited for legacy systems, retro builds, or low-cost desktops where integrated graphics and moderate processing power are sufficient. It remains a capable choice for general computing, light content creation, and entry-level gaming, but it is no longer competitive in high-performance or modern workstation environments. As of February 2026, the i7-4790 serves more as a historical benchmark than a practical recommendation for new systems.
