Athlon Gold 7220U Details

Built on AMD's Zen 2 microarchitecture and fabricated on a 6 nm process by TSMC, the Athlon Gold 7220U is a mobile processor designed for efficiency and integrated graphics performance. Released in September 2022, it has been in the market for over three years, positioning it as a budget-friendly option for lightweight computing tasks rather than high-end performance. The chip is packaged in Socket FT6 and features a TDP of just 15 W, making it ideal for ultra-thin laptops and devices where power efficiency is critical. Despite its age, the processor maintains relevance in entry-level mobile platforms due to its integrated Radeon 610M graphics and support for modern instruction sets.

The Athlon Gold 7220U features two cores and four threads thanks to AMD's Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) technology, which allows each core to handle two threads simultaneously. Base clock speed is set at 2.4 GHz, with a turbo frequency of up to 3.7 GHz, enabling short bursts of higher performance under load. It includes 0.061 MiB of L1 cache, 0.488 MiB of L2 cache, and a shared 3.815 MiB L3 cache, which aids in reducing memory latency. Memory support is limited to LPDDR5, operating at a rated speed of 5500 MT/s via a dual-channel interface, providing a peak memory bandwidth of 88.0 GB/s. The processor also supports PCIe Gen 3 with four lanes directly from the CPU.

Integrated graphics are provided by the Radeon 610M, a low-power GPU with unspecified shader count and maximum frequency, but capable of driving multiple displays for basic productivity and media tasks. The chip supports a wide range of technologies, including AES encryption, AVX, AVX2, BMI1/BMI2, FMA3, and AMD-V virtualization, making it suitable for virtual machines and computation-heavy applications. While it lacks AVX-512 support, the inclusion of AVX2 ensures continued relevance in modern software environments.

In benchmark testing, the Athlon Gold 7220U achieves an Overall Score of 4962, ranking #902 out of 2060 processors. Its Singlecore Score is 5209, placing it #804, while its Multicore Score reaches 4591, ranking #1101. This indicates that the processor performs well in single-threaded workloads but is significantly outpaced in multi-threaded environments. It trails behind several modern Intel and AMD offerings in both categories, particularly in multicore performance, where it is outperformed by processors like the Core i5-6500T and Ryzen 5 4600HS. However, it still competes with older mid-tier chips such as the Core i7-6700HQ and A10-9700E.

As of March 2026, the Athlon Gold 7220U remains a viable option for users seeking a low-power, budget-conscious mobile processor. Its strengths lie in its efficient design, support for modern instruction sets, and integrated graphics, making it suitable for everyday computing, light content creation, and office applications. While it is no longer competitive with modern high-performance CPUs, it continues to serve as a cost-effective solution in entry-level laptops and thin-and-light devices where thermal and power constraints are paramount.
