FX-8120 Details

Built on AMD's Zambezi microarchitecture at a 32 nm process node, the FX-8120 is a desktop processor that was released in October 2011. As of March 2026, this CPU is well over a decade old and represents an earlier generation of high-end desktop processors from AMD. Despite its age, the FX-8120 remains notable for its 8-core design, which was ambitious for its time, and its 3.1 GHz base clock speed, which provided strong multi-threaded performance in its era. The processor operates at a 65 W TDP and is designed for the FCLGA1155 socket, making it compatible with a range of motherboards from that generation.

It supports DDR3 1066/1333 memory in a dual-channel configuration, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 21 GB/s and up to 32 GB of system memory. The chip features 7.629 MiB of L3 cache and integrates an HD Graphics 3000 GPU with a burst frequency of 1100 MHz, capable of driving up to two displays. While not a primary graphics solution, the integrated GPU is functional for basic display output, particularly on motherboards that support this feature. The FX-8120 includes support for a wide range of instruction sets, including MMX, SSE, AVX, AVX2, AES, and AMD-V, enabling it to handle modern applications and virtualization tasks.

It also supports simultaneous multithreading, although this is not a defining feature of the architecture. In terms of benchmark performance, the FX-8120 achieves an overall score of 4953, ranking #908 out of 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 5189 (#813) and a multicore score of 4600 (#1090). These results place it behind many modern CPUs, particularly in single-threaded workloads, where it competes with mid-tier Intel processors like the Core i7-6820EQ and Xeon Gold 5120T. However, its multicore performance remains competitive with older mid-range chips such as the Phenom II X6 1065T and Core i3-7300T.

The processor's performance in the top 50 lists is modest, with no entry in the top 50 overall, single-core, or multicore rankings, highlighting its position as a legacy component in today's computing landscape. The FX-8120 is best suited for legacy systems, retro builds, or users who require a cost-effective multi-core solution for light workloads. While it lacks the efficiency and modern features of current processors, its unlocked multiplier and robust core count make it a viable option for enthusiasts focused on overclocking and basic computing tasks. As of 2026, it is no longer competitive in mainstream markets but retains value in niche applications where legacy compatibility and affordability are priorities.
