A6-5400K Details

Built on the Trinity microarchitecture and manufactured on a 32 nm process, the AMD A6-5400K is a desktop processor that was released in October 2012. Though now over a decade old, it remains notable for its integrated graphics and unlocked clock multiplier, which simplifies overclocking. Designed for the FM2 socket, the A6-5400K features a dual-core configuration with four threads, leveraging AMD's Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) technology to improve multitasking performance. The processor operates at a base frequency of 1.9 GHz, capable of boosting to 3.8 GHz under load, and includes 1 MB of L2 cache, with a TDP of 65 W. Despite its age, the chip supports modern memory standards such as DDR3L and DDR3 with dual-channel support, enabling memory bandwidth of up to 25.6 GB/s.

The A6-5400K integrates the Radeon HD 7540D GPU, which operates at a base frequency of 200 MHz and can reach a burst frequency of 1 GHz. This GPU supports up to three displays and provides decent graphics performance for basic tasks and light gaming. It also includes support for hardware virtualization, AVX, AVX2, and other advanced instruction sets, making it capable of handling modern software workloads despite its outdated architecture. The processor is built on a 246 mm² die, contains 1.3 billion transistors, and is fabricated by GlobalFoundries.

In benchmark testing, the A6-5400K achieves an Overall Score of 4305, ranking #1521 out of 2060 processors. Its Singlecore Score is 4309, placing it at #1478, while its Multicore Score of 4299 positions it at #1755. These results place the A6-5400K behind modern CPUs but ahead of several older dual-core and low-power processors such as the Celeron J1900 and Core 2 Duo P9600. The processor's performance is most competitive in single-threaded applications, where its higher clock speed and unlocked multiplier provide a noticeable edge over its peers. However, its multicore performance is limited by its age and lack of modern architectural improvements.

As of March 2026, the A6-5400K is best suited for light office use, media playback, and basic multimedia tasks. Its integrated graphics make it a viable option for users who want to avoid a discrete GPU, and its overclocking potential allows enthusiasts to squeeze additional performance from the chip. While it cannot compete with today’s high-end processors—such as the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX or Core Ultra 9 285K—it still holds a place in the ecosystem for budget systems or retro builds. Its inclusion in the Passmark rankings highlights its historical significance and continued relevance in niche markets.
