Xeon Gold 6246 Details

The Intel Xeon Gold 6246 represents a key member of Intel's Cascade Lake SP family, designed for high-performance server environments where reliability, scalability, and computational throughput are paramount. Released in the mid-2010s, the processor is now considered a mature platform, though its capabilities still hold relevance in enterprise and data center workloads. As of early 2026, it remains competitive in specific server-class benchmarks, particularly in multithreaded applications, but has been surpassed by newer generations in single-core performance and modern instruction set support.

Built on Intel’s 14 nm process and based on the Cascade Lake microarchitecture, the Xeon Gold 6246 delivers a balanced combination of core count and clock speed. It features 12 physical cores and 24 threads thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), making it well-suited for virtualization, database operations, and high-throughput computing. The base frequency of 3.3 GHz is complemented by a turbo frequency of up to 4.2 GHz, enabling efficient handling of burst workloads. With a TDP of 165 W and a socketed design using LGA-3647, the chip is optimized for server-grade platforms such as the Purley platform, which supports up to four processors.

Memory architecture plays a crucial role in the Xeon Gold 6246’s performance. It supports up to 1,048,576 MiB of DDR4-2933 memory across six channels, delivering a peak memory bandwidth of 131.13 GiB/s. This is complemented by a robust cache hierarchy, including 0.75 MiB of L1 cache (split between 0.375 MiB for data and 0.375 MiB for instructions), 12 MiB of L2 cache, and a substantial 24.75 MiB of L3 cache shared across all cores. These features help reduce latency and improve performance in data-intensive applications.

The Xeon Gold 6246 also integrates a wide range of enterprise-grade technologies, including Intel’s AVX-512 instruction set, which enhances performance in scientific computing, machine learning, and financial modeling. Other key features include Intel Deep Learning Boost, Intel VT-x and VT-d virtualization support, ECC memory, and Intel Speed Shift Technology for dynamic frequency scaling. The processor also supports advanced security features such as Intel Trusted Execution Technology and Secure Key.

In benchmark evaluations, the Xeon Gold 6246 achieves an overall PassMark score of 5334, ranking #592 out of 2060 processors. Its single-core score of 5588 places it at #491, while its multicore performance reaches a score of 4953, ranking #670. These results indicate that while the CPU is capable in multithreaded tasks, its single-core performance is somewhat limited compared to modern consumer and server processors. It performs well against older Xeon models like the E5-2686 v4 and E5-2697 v4, but falls behind newer high-end Xeons and AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper PRO series.

Overall, the Xeon Gold 6246 remains a viable option for mid-tier server deployments requiring strong multithreaded performance, memory bandwidth, and enterprise reliability. However, its age and lack of cutting-edge features such as newer instruction sets or advanced AI acceleration limit its appeal in future-facing data center environments. For organizations maintaining legacy infrastructure or running workloads that benefit from SMT and high memory capacity, the Xeon Gold 6246 continues to deliver solid value.
