Xeon Gold 6146 Details

Designed for demanding server workloads, the Intel Xeon Gold 6146 is a high-performance processor built on the Skylake-SP microarchitecture and fabricated on a 14 nm process. Released as part of Intel's Purley platform, it targets enterprise environments requiring robust multi-threaded performance and support for ECC memory. As of March 2026, this processor is considered an older generation part, but it remains relevant in data center and virtualization applications due to its strong multicore capabilities and extensive feature set.

The Xeon Gold 6146 features 12 cores and 24 threads, enabled by Intel's Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) technology, allowing efficient handling of parallel tasks. It operates at a base frequency of 3.2 GHz and can boost up to 4.2 GHz on a single core, with a TDP of 165 W, making it suitable for high-density server deployments. The processor supports up to 768 GB of DDR4-2666 memory across six channels, delivering a maximum memory bandwidth of 119.21 GiB/s. It includes a substantial cache hierarchy: 0.75 MiB of L1 cache, 12 MiB of L2 cache, and 24.75 MiB of L3 cache, enhancing data access speeds for intensive applications.

Intel has equipped the Xeon Gold 6146 with a broad range of enterprise-grade technologies, including AVX-512, AES-NI, Intel Speed Shift, Turbo Boost 2.0, and Intel vPro. It supports virtualization with VT-x and VT-d, as well as trusted execution via TXT, making it ideal for secure, scalable environments. The chip also includes Extended Page Tables (EPT) for efficient virtual machine management and Intel's Transactional Synchronization Extensions (TSX) for improved database and transaction processing.

In benchmark testing, the Xeon Gold 6146 achieves an overall score of 6,115, ranking #209 among 2,060 processors, with a single-core score of 5,841 (#336) and a multicore score of 6,525 (#152). While it lags behind the top-tier CPUs in the 10,000+ score range—such as the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX and Core Ultra 9 285K—it holds its own against many mainstream and mid-range server processors. Its multicore performance is particularly strong, outperforming several Xeon Platinum and E5 models, though it trails behind newer generation chips from AMD and Intel.

The Xeon Gold 6146 is best suited for data center servers, cloud computing platforms, and virtualization environments where consistent multi-threaded performance and reliability are critical. While not a top performer in single-threaded tasks, its balance of core count, memory bandwidth, and enterprise features makes it a reliable choice for legacy and mid-tier server workloads. Despite its age, it continues to serve as a solid foundation in environments that prioritize stability over cutting-edge performance.
