Core i7-4820K Details

Built on Intel's Ivy Bridge-E architecture at a 22 nm process, the Core i7-4820K is a desktop processor that was launched in September 2013. While now considered a legacy chip by modern standards, it remains notable for its high performance at the time and its unlocked multiplier, which made it a favorite among overclockers. As of March 2026, the processor is over a decade old, and its relevance has diminished in the face of newer, more efficient designs from both Intel and AMD. However, it still holds a place in enthusiast and budget builds where its strong single-core performance and multi-threading capabilities can be leveraged effectively.

The i7-4820K features four physical cores with Hyper-Threading, enabling eight threads to be processed simultaneously. It operates at a base frequency of 3.7 GHz and can boost up to 3.9 GHz under load, supported by a 130 W TDP that necessitates adequate cooling. The chip is manufactured using 1.86 billion transistors and features 10 MB of L3 cache, which is split across the cores to reduce latency and improve data access. It supports quad-channel DDR3 memory at speeds up to 1866 MHz, with a maximum capacity of 64 GB and a peak memory bandwidth of 59.7 GB/s. Connectivity is handled via PCIe 3.0, with up to 40 lanes available, allowing for robust expansion with multiple high-speed devices.

Despite its age, the i7-4820K offers a compelling balance of performance and flexibility. It supports a wide range of advanced technologies, including AVX, AVX2, AES-NI, and Intel's virtualization features such as VT-x and VT-d. These capabilities make it suitable for demanding applications such as video editing, 3D rendering, and virtualization, although its power consumption and heat output are significant drawbacks in modern systems. The processor lacks integrated graphics, requiring a discrete GPU for any visual output, which limits its utility in low-power or compact systems.

In benchmark testing, the Core i7-4820K achieves an overall score of 5132, ranking it #765 among 2060 processors. Its single-core performance scores 5253, placing it at #767, while its multicore performance reaches 4951, ranking #674. These results highlight a strong single-threaded performance, which is competitive with some modern mid-range CPUs, but its multicore performance is significantly outpaced by today's leading processors. The i7-4820K outperforms several recent Intel and AMD chips in the single-core category, including the Core i7-5700HQ and the Pentium Gold G5420, but falls behind the top-tier CPUs in multi-threaded workloads.

Given its age and high TDP, the Core i7-4820K is best suited for legacy systems or enthusiasts who value overclocking potential and compatibility with older hardware. While it is no longer competitive in mainstream or high-end computing, it remains a viable option for users who prioritize raw single-core performance and have the thermal and power infrastructure to support it. For new builds, modern processors offer superior efficiency, performance, and features, but the i7-4820K continues to serve as a reliable, albeit dated, option in the right context.
