Xeon E3-1285 v6 Details

Built on Intel's Kaby Lake microarchitecture and fabricated using a 14 nm process, the Xeon E3-1285 v6 represents a server-grade processor designed for workstation and entry-level server environments. Released in August 2017, this CPU is now over six years old, placing it in the older generation of Intel’s desktop and server offerings. Despite its age, the Xeon E3-1285 v6 remains notable for its integrated graphics and ECC memory support, making it a viable option for business and technical applications requiring reliability and data integrity.

The processor features four cores with eight threads enabled via Intel Hyper-Threading, allowing it to handle multithreaded workloads efficiently. It operates at a base frequency of 4.1 GHz and can boost up to 4.5 GHz, depending on workload and thermal conditions. The chip is built on the Kaby Lake-DT architecture and uses the FCLGA-1151 socket, which was widely used across Intel’s mainstream desktop and server platforms during that era. With a TDP of 79 W, the Xeon E3-1285 v6 strikes a balance between performance and power efficiency, making it suitable for systems with moderate cooling capabilities.

Memory support includes dual-channel DDR3L-1866 and DDR4-2400, with a maximum capacity of 64 GB and a peak bandwidth of 35.76 GB/s. The processor integrates 8 MB of L3 cache, 1 MB of L2 cache, and 0.25 MB of L1 cache, distributed as 0.125 MB for both L1 instruction and data caches. This cache hierarchy supports high-speed data access, which is beneficial for applications requiring frequent memory reads and writes. The chip also supports advanced technologies such as AVX2, AES-NI, and Intel VT-x, enhancing performance in encryption, virtualization, and scientific computing.

Integrated into the Xeon E3-1285 v6 is the HD Graphics P630 GPU, featuring 24 execution units and a base frequency of 350 MHz, with a boost up to 1.15 GHz. It supports up to three displays and can utilize up to 1.7 GB of system memory as video memory. While not intended for high-end gaming, the integrated graphics make the processor suitable for light multimedia tasks and remote desktop applications.

In benchmark testing, the Xeon E3-1285 v6 achieves an overall score of 5502, ranking #480 out of 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 5939 (#296) and a multicore score of 4847 (#793). It outperforms several modern consumer processors like the Core i5-7400 and Ryzen 3 3300X but trails behind high-end CPUs such as the Ryzen Threadripper and Core i9-14900KS. Its single-core performance is particularly strong, placing it among the top performers in its category, while its multicore performance is solid but not class-leading. The processor is best suited for professional workloads such as CAD, virtualization, and software development, where single-threaded performance and ECC memory are critical. As of March 2026, the Xeon E3-1285 v6 remains a capable, albeit aging, choice for cost-effective, reliable computing in business and technical environments.
