Intel Atom x5-Z8500 Details

Built on Intel's Airmont microarchitecture at a 14 nm process, the Intel Atom x5-Z8500 represents a mid-tier mobile processor from the Cherry Trail platform. Released in 2015, this chip is now over a decade old, placing it well beyond its peak relevance in today's computing landscape. Despite its age, the x5-Z8500 was designed for low-power tablets and lightweight laptops, offering a balance of efficiency and basic performance suitable for general productivity and media consumption.

The processor features four cores and four threads, operating at a base frequency of 1.44 GHz with a turbo boost up to 2.24 GHz. It includes a 2 MiB L2 cache but lacks an L3 cache, reflecting its entry-level design. With a TDP of just 2 W, it emphasizes power efficiency over raw performance, making it ideal for fanless or low-thermal systems. It supports up to 8 GB of DDR3L memory at 1066 MHz, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 8.5 GB/s. The CPU uses a BGA1168 socket, which is not user-upgradeable.

Integrated into the x5-Z8500 is Intel HD Graphics, a low-power GPU with a base frequency of 200 MHz and a maximum frequency of 600 MHz. This graphics unit supports up to four display outputs and is capable of handling 1080p video playback, though it is unsuitable for modern gaming or graphic-intensive applications. The processor also supports key instruction sets including SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, AES-NI, and NX, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of software, albeit at limited performance levels.

In benchmark testing, the Intel Atom x5-Z8500 scores 3,850 overall, placing it at #1992 out of 2060 processors. Its single-core score of 3,545 ranks it #2004, while its multicore score of 4,307 places it #1734. These results indicate that the x5-Z8500 is significantly outpaced by modern CPUs, even among older models. It ranks just above the Atom x7-Z8750 and Atom Z3775, but falls behind more powerful contemporaries like the Celeron N3000 and Atom N550. Its performance is particularly weak in single-threaded tasks, where it lags behind nearly all modern processors.

As of March 2026, the Intel Atom x5-Z8500 remains a relic of an earlier era in mobile computing. While it may still function in basic applications or as a secondary device, it is no longer competitive for mainstream use. Its low power consumption and small footprint make it suitable only for niche scenarios such as embedded systems or legacy devices where performance is secondary to energy efficiency.
