Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX Details

Built on AMD's Zen 5 (Shimada Peak) microarchitecture at a 4 nm process node, the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX represents a significant leap in high-end workstation performance. Manufactured by TSMC, this processor is engineered for demanding professional environments where raw computational power and memory bandwidth are critical. With a launch date in July 2025, the 9965WX is a recent addition to AMD’s workstation lineup, designed to compete with the highest-tier offerings in both single-core and multi-threaded workloads.

The CPU features 24 cores and 48 threads, enabled by Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), and operates at a base frequency of 4.2 GHz with a turbo boost up to 5.4 GHz. It is built on a 33.26 billion transistor die, utilizing an eight-channel DDR5 memory interface with support for up to 6400 MT/s memory speeds. ECC memory support ensures data integrity in mission-critical applications, while the 128 MB of L3 cache and 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes provide ample bandwidth for high-performance storage and expansion. The processor is packaged in FC-LGA4844 and fits the sTR5 socket, requiring a compatible WRX90 or TRX50 motherboard.

Despite its powerful capabilities, the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX comes with a 350 W TDP, making it a power-hungry component that demands robust cooling solutions. It lacks integrated graphics, so a discrete GPU is required for visual output. The chip supports a wide range of instruction sets, including AVX, AVX2, AVX-512, and AMD-V virtualization, enhancing performance in scientific computing, rendering, and virtualized environments.

In benchmark testing, the 9965WX achieves an overall score of 8521, ranking #9 among 2060 processors, and a single-core score of 7793, placing it #24. Its multicore performance reaches 9614, ranking #9 in the multicore category. These results place it ahead of many consumer-grade CPUs and even some high-end desktop processors, though it trails behind its siblings like the 9975WX and 9995WX in both single and multicore performance.

As of March 2026, the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX remains a top-tier option for professionals in fields such as 3D rendering, video editing, and simulation, where both high clock speeds and large core counts are essential. While not the fastest in its class, its balance of performance, memory support, and PCIe 5.0 capabilities makes it a compelling choice for workstation users who require a powerful, scalable platform.
