Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX Details

As of March 2026, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX stands as a high-end workstation processor designed for demanding professional workloads. Launched in late 2023, it represents a significant step in AMD's commitment to performance at the top of the workstation and server markets. The processor is built on the Zen 4 (Storm Peak) architecture and fabricated using TSMC's 5 nm process, enabling a transistor count of 52.56 billion. This advanced node contributes to the chip's high performance while maintaining thermal efficiency despite its 350 W TDP. The Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX features 64 cores and 128 threads, a configuration made possible by Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), which effectively doubles the number of logical processors. With a base clock of 3.2 GHz and a turbo frequency reaching up to 5.1 GHz, the chip delivers impressive single-threaded and multi-threaded performance. It is compatible with the sTR5 socket and requires a WRX90 or TRX50 chipset for full functionality.

The processor supports eight-channel DDR5 memory with a rated speed of 5200 MT/s, providing a peak memory bandwidth of 332.8 GB/s. This high bandwidth is essential for applications such as 3D rendering, video editing, and scientific simulations that require rapid data access. The L3 cache measures a massive 244.141 MiB, distributed across the cores to minimize latency in data-intensive tasks. The chip also supports ECC memory, a crucial feature for mission-critical systems where data integrity is paramount. Additionally, it includes 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes directly from the CPU, offering ample connectivity for high-speed storage, networking, and GPU expansion.

In benchmark testing, the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX achieves an Overall Score of 8602, ranking #7 among 2060 processors in the top 50 overall list. It scores 7274 in Singlecore performance, placing it at #52, and 10593 in Multicore performance, ranking #5. These results position the chip just behind the higher-tier Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX and the 9995WX, but ahead of the 9975WX and 9965WX. Its multicore performance is particularly strong, placing it in the upper echelon of workstation processors, though it trails behind the latest offerings from Intel’s Core Ultra and AMD’s own higher-clocked Threadripper PRO variants. The Passmark scores further highlight its capabilities, with a number crunching score of 12677, data processing of 13069, and physics compute of 11756—each ranking in the top five of their respective categories.

The processor lacks integrated graphics, making it necessary to pair it with a discrete GPU for visual output. However, it supports a wide range of advanced technologies, including AVX-512, AES-NI, and AMD-V, which enhance performance in encryption, machine learning, and virtualization. The unlocked multiplier allows for extensive overclocking, though the 350 W TDP demands robust cooling solutions. Given its high cost, launch price of $7,349, and power requirements, the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX is best suited for professional environments such as digital content creation, engineering simulations, and high-end data analysis. It remains a powerful option for users who require extreme computational power in a single socket configuration.
