Ryzen Threadripper 9980X Details

The Ryzen Threadripper 9980X stands as a powerhouse in AMD's high-end desktop lineup, launching in July 2025 at a steep $4,999 price point. Positioned just below the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX, it secures the second spot in the overall performance rankings, trailing only its sibling by a narrow margin. Its dominance in the multicore segment is particularly notable, ranking #2 with a score of 11,155, placing it ahead of the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX and the Ryzen Threadripper 7980X, which are both priced significantly lower. This positions the 9980X as a direct competitor to the flagship PRO 9995WX, offering nearly identical performance at a more accessible price.

At its core, the processor is built on AMD's Zen 5 architecture, specifically the Shimada Peak design, fabricated on a 4 nm process by TSMC. It features a staggering 64 cores and 128 threads, thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), making it ideal for heavily threaded workloads. The chip operates at a base frequency of 3.2 GHz and can boost up to 5.4 GHz, depending on the workload and cooling solution. With a massive 256 MB of L3 cache and 66.5 billion transistors, it is engineered for maximum throughput.

Despite its immense power, the 9980X comes with a 350 W TDP, demanding top-tier cooling solutions and robust power delivery. It operates on the Socket sTR5 platform, supporting DDR5 memory with a quad-channel interface, rated at up to 6400 MT/s, though higher speeds are achievable with overclocking. ECC memory support adds to its appeal in professional and server-like environments where data integrity is critical.

The processor lacks integrated graphics, requiring a discrete GPU, and supports a wide array of modern features, including AVX-512, AMD-Vi, and IOMMU for virtualization. It also supports PCIe 5.0 with 80 lanes directly from the CPU, enabling high-bandwidth connectivity for multiple GPUs and storage devices.

In single-core performance, the 9980X ranks #20 with a score of 7,822, placing it behind mainstream high-end processors like the Core i9-14900KS and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, but ahead of its immediate competitors in the Threadripper PRO lineup. This highlights a strength in multi-threaded tasks over single-threaded performance.

As of March 2026, the Ryzen Threadripper 9980X remains a top-tier option for professionals, content creators, and workstation users who require extreme computational power, even as newer models begin to emerge. Its performance, coupled with the high cost, makes it a niche product aimed at power users and enterprises rather than the average enthusiast.
