EPYC 7642 Details

Launched in August 2019, the AMD EPYC 7642 remains a powerful server-grade processor built on the Zen 2 (Rome) architecture, designed for high-end data center and enterprise workloads. Despite its age, it continues to hold a strong position in the server market due to its exceptional core count and multithreading capabilities. The processor features 48 cores and 96 threads, enabled by AMD's Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) technology, making it ideal for virtualization, content creation, and scientific computing. With a base clock of 2.4 GHz and a turbo frequency of up to 3.4 GHz, it delivers robust performance across a wide range of applications.

Fabricated on a 7 nm process by TSMC, the EPYC 7642 integrates 3.8 billion transistors into a 192 mm² die, emphasizing efficiency and performance density. It supports up to 4,096 GB of DDR4-3200 memory across eight channels, providing a maximum memory bandwidth of 190.7 GB/s. This high-bandwidth memory interface ensures fast data access for memory-intensive tasks. The processor also supports ECC memory, a critical feature for mission-critical systems where data integrity is paramount.

The EPYC 7642 includes advanced features such as AVX2, AES-NI, and AMD-V virtualization, enhancing performance in encryption, compression, and virtualized environments. It supports up to 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, enabling high-speed connectivity with modern storage and networking devices. The chip operates at a TDP of 225 W, requiring robust cooling solutions, and is packaged in FCLGA-4094, compatible with Socket SP3 and LGA-4094 platforms.

In benchmark testing, the EPYC 7642 achieves an overall score of 6,599, ranking #108 out of 2,060 processors, with a multicore score of 8,338 (#20 of 2,060) and a single-core score of 5,440 (#601 of 2,060). These results place it ahead of mainstream desktop CPUs like the Core i9-13900KS and Core i9-14900KS, while still trailing behind newer high-end models such as the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9955WX and Xeon w9-3495X. Its strongest performance lies in multithreaded workloads, where it competes effectively with other server-class processors.

As of March 2026, the EPYC 7642 remains a compelling choice for server and workstation environments that demand high core counts and strong multithreading performance. While newer processors have surpassed it in single-core performance, its 48-core architecture and PCIe 4.0 support make it a valuable asset in data centers and virtualization clusters. Its longevity and reliability continue to make it a relevant option for businesses seeking cost-effective, high-performance server solutions.
