Ryzen AI Max 390 Details

The Ryzen AI Max 390 represents a significant leap forward in mobile processor design, particularly in its integration of advanced AI acceleration capabilities alongside high-performance computing. Launched in January 2025, this chip is part of AMD's latest Ryzen AI Max lineup, built on the Zen 5 (Strix Halo) architecture and fabricated using TSMC’s 4 nm process node. While relatively new, it stands as a modern solution tailored for power users who demand both computational strength and intelligent processing on the go.

Designed for the mobile market, the Ryzen AI Max 390 features a 12-core, 24-thread configuration enabled by Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), delivering robust multitasking and high-throughput performance. With a base clock of 3.2 GHz and a turbo frequency reaching up to 5.0 GHz, it delivers impressive single-core and multi-core performance. The processor is built with a 64 MB L3 cache, complemented by 0.076 MiB of L1 and 0.954 MiB of L2 cache, ensuring fast access to frequently used data. It supports quad-channel LPDDR5X memory running at up to 8000 MT/s, enabling a memory bandwidth of 256.0 GB/s, which is critical for memory-intensive applications.

One of the standout features of the Ryzen AI Max 390 is its integration of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of up to 50 TOPS, making it ideal for AI workloads such as machine learning inference, real-time image processing, and natural language tasks. This, combined with the Radeon 8050S integrated graphics featuring 640 shader cores and a maximum frequency of 2.1 GHz, allows it to handle both graphical and AI tasks efficiently. The chip also supports ECC memory, a rare feature in mobile processors, enhancing reliability in mission-critical environments.

In benchmark testing, the Ryzen AI Max 390 achieves an overall score of 7265, ranking #49 out of 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 7308 (#49) and a multicore score of 7200 (#83). These results place it among the top-tier mobile processors, competing closely with high-end Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen 9 mobile CPUs. While it falls behind the top-tier models like the Core i9-14900HX and Ryzen 9 9950X3D, its performance is notably strong in single-threaded tasks, where it ranks just behind several high-end desktop processors.

The processor operates at a 55 W TDP, making it energy-efficient for mobile devices while still delivering high performance. It is packaged in a FC-BGA format and uses Socket FP11, a proprietary interface for mobile systems. It supports PCIe Gen 4 with 16 lanes (CPU-only) and includes a comprehensive suite of instruction sets, including AVX, AVX2, AVX-512, AES, SHA, and AMD-V virtualization. Despite its locked clock multiplier, the processor’s efficiency and performance make it a compelling option for creators, developers, and power users.

As of March 2026, the Ryzen AI Max 390 remains a competitive choice in the mobile segment, particularly for users who prioritize AI acceleration, single-core performance, and integrated graphics. Its ability to handle both traditional computing and modern AI workloads positions it as a versatile processor for future-proofed mobile systems.
