EPYC 7501 Details

The AMD EPYC 7501 represents a significant step forward in server processor design, leveraging the Zen (Naples) microarchitecture to deliver robust performance for data center and high-end workstation environments. Released in June 2017, the EPYC 7501 is now over six years old, placing it firmly in the category of established server processors rather than cutting-edge technology. Despite its age, it remains relevant in certain enterprise settings due to its strong core count, memory bandwidth, and virtualization capabilities. As of March 2026, while newer generations have eclipsed it in performance, the EPYC 7501 still holds its ground in multi-threaded workloads where cost-effective scalability is a priority.

At the heart of the EPYC 7501 is a 32-core, 64-thread design built on a 14 nm process node, fabricated by GlobalFoundries under AMD's design. This multi-chip package integrates four dies into a single unit, each contributing to the processor’s overall performance. Instruction set support includes AVX2, AES-NI, and BMI1/BMI2, ensuring compatibility with modern enterprise software and cryptographic workloads.

In benchmark testing, the EPYC 7501 achieves an overall score of 5145, placing it at #753 among 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 4809 (#1068) and a multicore score of 5650 (#338). Its multicore performance outpaces many consumer-grade CPUs, including the Core i7-10700KF and Ryzen 9 5900HX, but trails behind modern high-end processors like the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX and Core Ultra 9 285K. While its single-core performance is respectable, it is clearly outpaced by newer high-frequency desktop and mobile chips. The processor's strength lies in its ability to deliver sustained multi-threaded throughput, making it ideal for virtualization, database servers, and content creation workloads where core count and memory bandwidth are more critical than single-threaded speed.
