Linux 7.1 Announced: Major Hardware Enhancements for AMD Zen 6 and Intel Arc

Linux developers have announced the next major kernel version, Linux 7.1, which is anticipated to deliver a suite of significant performance enhancements and dramatically expanded hardware compatibility. This update aims to provide comprehensive support for both AMD's next-generation processors, modern Intel components, as well as maintaining reliability across older architectures.

A primary focus is the greatly enhanced support for the latest generation of AMD CPUs. With the 7.1-rc7 release, the supported model ID range for AMD Zen 6 is expanding from an initial count of 207 to up to 239. This substantial increase in IDs vastly improves 'early readiness,' allowing developers and system integrators to optimally test and integrate next-generation Ryzen and EPYC processors well ahead of their official market launch.

Beyond the advances for AMD, Linux 7.1 introduces crucial improvements for the Intel ecosystem. Key among these is the default enabling of Intel FRED, which promises improved performance optimization for modern CPUs like Panther Lake. Furthermore, dedicated optimizations are being implemented for graphics cards such as Intel Arc Battlemage, while a new NTFS driver boosts reliability and compatibility when handling this common file system.

Crucially, the kernel does not neglect legacy hardware: support for older AMD GCN APUs is maintained through the implementation of the AMDGPU DC feature.
