Core i9-9990XE Details

Built on Intel's Skylake X Refresh microarchitecture and manufactured using a 14 nm process, the Core i9-9990XE is a high-end desktop processor launched in October 2018. As of March 2026, it is considered an older platform, but its performance and design reflect the peak of Intel's workstation-focused processor development during that era. Designed for demanding workloads, the i9-9990XE is part of the Core i9 Extreme lineup, targeting enthusiasts and professionals who require extreme multi-threaded performance and high clock speeds. The processor is socketed in the FCLGA-2066 package and operates on the Socket R4 platform, requiring a compatible chipset such as Lewisburg.

The Core i9-9990XE features 14 cores and 28 threads, enabled by Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, allowing it to handle complex, parallelized workloads with efficiency. Base clock speed is listed at 4.0 GHz, with a turbo frequency of up to 5.0 GHz, depending on the number of active cores and thermal conditions. This high clock speed, combined with a large L3 cache of 19.25 MiB and 14 MiB of L2 cache, ensures excellent data throughput and latency performance. The processor also includes 0.438 MiB of L1 cache for both instructions and data, split into 8-way associative caches, contributing to its strong single-core performance.

With a TDP of 255 W, the i9-9990XE is a power-hungry component, necessitating robust cooling solutions such as high-performance air coolers or liquid cooling systems. It supports quad-channel DDR4-2666 memory with a maximum capacity of 131 GB and a peak memory bandwidth of 85.3 GB/s, although the system memory bandwidth is listed at 79.47 GiB/s due to architectural and interface constraints. The CPU uses a PCI Express 3.0 interface with up to 44 lanes available directly from the CPU, enabling high-bandwidth connections for storage and expansion cards.

The Core i9-9990XE lacks integrated graphics, requiring a discrete GPU for visual output. However, it supports a wide range of advanced instruction sets, including AVX-512, AVX2, AVX, SSE, and AES-NI, making it well-suited for scientific computing, 3D rendering, and encryption tasks. It also includes Intel's Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0, which dynamically identifies the best cores and pushes them to higher frequencies when needed, further enhancing performance in workload-specific scenarios.

In benchmark testing, the Core i9-9990XE achieves an Overall Score of 7082, ranking #58 out of 2060 processors, with a Singlecore Score of 6696 (#85) and a Multicore Score of 7662 (#49). These results place it among the top-tier desktop CPUs of its time, competing closely with high-end Xeon and Ryzen Threadripper processors. While it trails behind newer offerings like the Ryzen 9 9950X3D or Core Ultra 9 285K, its multicore performance remains competitive, especially in applications that benefit from high core counts and sustained clock speeds.

Given its power requirements and market positioning, the Core i9-9990XE is best suited for workstation environments, content creation, and high-performance computing. As of 2026, while it is no longer a mainstream option, it remains a viable choice for users maintaining legacy systems or seeking a cost-effective high-core-count processor for specific professional tasks.
