Ryzen 9 PRO 3900 Details

Built on AMD's Zen 2 microarchitecture and manufactured on a 7 nm process node, the Ryzen 9 PRO 3900 is a high-performance desktop processor designed for professional workstations and demanding computing environments. Though originally released in 2020, the chip remains relevant due to its strong balance of core count, frequency, and efficiency. As of early 2026, the Ryzen 9 PRO 3900 holds a prominent position in the professional desktop segment, offering a blend of single-threaded responsiveness and multi-threaded throughput that makes it suitable for content creation, virtualization, and software development.

The processor features 12 cores and 24 threads, enabled by Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), with a base frequency of 3.1 GHz and a turbo frequency of up to 4.3 GHz. This combination allows the chip to scale efficiently across workloads that leverage parallel processing. The die is constructed as a multi-chip package with three dies, delivering a total of 64 MiB of L3 cache, 6 MiB of L2 cache, and 0.75 MiB of L1 cache. With a 65 W TDP and Socket AM4 support, it offers a power-efficient profile that fits well into mainstream desktop builds without requiring extensive cooling solutions.

Memory support includes DDR4-3200 with dual-channel configuration, delivering a maximum bandwidth of 47.68 GiB/s and up to 131 GiB of system memory. The chip supports PCIe 4.0 and includes advanced features such as Precision Boost 2, Extended Frequency Range 2, and SenseMI technology, which enhance performance and power management. Additionally, the processor includes robust instruction set support, including AVX-2, AES-NI, and FMA3, making it well-suited for encryption, multimedia encoding, and scientific computing.

In benchmark testing, the Ryzen 9 PRO 3900 achieves an overall score of 6,171, placing it at #188 out of 2,060 processors. It scores 6,116 in single-core performance (#228) and 6,254 in multicore performance (#198). While it trails behind newer generations like the Ryzen 9 9950X and Core Ultra 9 285K, it competes closely with older high-end desktop processors such as the Core i9-10980X and Ryzen 5 7500F. Its multicore performance ranks just behind the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and EPYC 7282, indicating it remains competitive in multi-threaded workloads despite its age.

The Ryzen 9 PRO 3900 is not equipped with integrated graphics, making it ideal for systems with discrete GPUs. Its primary strengths lie in its high core count, strong single-threaded performance, and support for enterprise-grade features such as ECC memory compatibility (though not enabled in this configuration) and AMD-V virtualization. While newer processors have surpassed it in both single-core and overall performance, the Ryzen 9 PRO 3900 continues to serve as a reliable, cost-effective option for professionals requiring a balance of power and efficiency in a desktop environment.
