EPYC 7F72 Details

Built on AMD's Zen 2 (Rome) microarchitecture and fabricated on a 7 nm process by TSMC, the EPYC 7F72 is a high-performance server and workstation processor launched in April 2020. With a 24-core, 48-thread design enabled by Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), it delivers strong multi-threaded performance suitable for demanding workloads. The processor operates at a base frequency of 3.2 GHz and can boost up to 3.7 GHz, depending on workload and thermals. It features a substantial 183.1 MB of L3 cache and is packaged in the FCLGA-4094 socket, supporting an eight-channel DDR4 memory interface rated up to 3200 MT/s. The chip integrates 3.8 billion transistors across a 74 mm² die and is designed for high-power environments, with a TDP of 240 W.

The EPYC 7F72 lacks integrated graphics, requiring a discrete GPU for visual output, which is typical for server-grade processors. It supports advanced virtualization features including AMD-V and AMD-Vi, enabling efficient guest OS performance and PCI passthrough. The processor also includes hardware encryption instructions such as AES-NI and supports secure memory encryption (SME) and secure encrypted virtualization (SEV), making it suitable for data-sensitive enterprise environments. It supports both AVX and AVX2 instruction sets, enhancing performance in scientific computing, media encoding, and machine learning applications.

In benchmark testing, the EPYC 7F72 achieves an overall score of 6046, placing it at #234 out of 2060 processors. Its single-core performance scores 5467, ranking #580, while its multicore performance reaches 6914, placing it at #107. This indicates that the processor's strengths lie in multithreaded tasks, though it trails behind modern consumer and high-end server CPUs in single-core efficiency. In the top 50 multicore list, it ranks just behind the EPYC 7552 and Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX, and is outpaced by many newer platforms. However, in the single-core rankings, it trails well behind current high-performance desktop and mobile chips.

As of March 2026, the EPYC 7F72 remains relevant in legacy server environments and for workloads that benefit from its high core count and memory bandwidth. While it is no longer at the forefront of performance, its robust ECC memory support, dual-socket scalability, and extensive feature set make it a solid choice for virtualization, data center, and high-throughput computing applications where long-term stability and reliability are prioritized over raw speed.
