Xeon X5660 Details

Built on Intel's Westmere-EP architecture at a 32 nm process, the Xeon X5660 is a server-grade processor that debuted in March 2010. While long past its prime by modern standards, it remains a notable example of Intel’s early 64-bit multi-core server CPUs, featuring a 65 W TDP and a dual-socket (SMP) capable design. With a base clock of 2.8 GHz and a turbo boost up to 3.2 GHz, the Xeon X5660 delivers strong performance for its era, especially in multi-threaded workloads. It supports up to 288 GB of DDR3 memory across a triple-channel interface, with ECC support ensuring data integrity in mission-critical environments. The chip also integrates Intel's vPro technology and virtualization features like VT-x and VT-d, making it well-suited for enterprise and virtualized server deployments.

The Xeon X5660 features six cores with a total of 12 threads, thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading technology, allowing it to efficiently handle concurrent tasks. It includes a 12 MB L3 cache, 0.061 MiB of L1 cache, and 0.244 MiB of L2 cache, supporting a robust memory subsystem with a maximum bandwidth of 32 GB/s. The processor uses the FCLGA1366 socket and supports PCI Express 2.0 with up to 16 lanes, enabling connectivity for high-speed storage and expansion cards. Despite its advanced features, the Xeon X5660 lacks integrated graphics, meaning users must rely on a discrete GPU for visual output.

In benchmark testing, the Xeon X5660 achieves an overall score of 4704, ranking #1100 out of 2060 processors, with a single-core score of 4650 (#1176) and a multicore score of 4786 (#863). It compares closely with contemporaries such as the Core i5-4570 and Xeon X3460, though it trails behind more modern processors like the Ryzen Threadripper and Core Ultra series. The processor's multicore performance is its strongest attribute, reflecting its design for server and workstation environments where thread density matters more than single-core speed. While the single-core score is solid, it falls behind many modern CPUs, highlighting the generational gap.

As of March 2026, the Xeon X5660 is best suited for legacy systems, retro computing projects, or low-cost server applications where power efficiency and cutting-edge performance are not priorities. Its 32 nm manufacturing process and 95 W TDP make it less efficient compared to today's 5 nm and 7 nm chips, and its lack of integrated graphics limits its use in consumer desktops. However, its support for ECC memory, virtualization, and multi-socket configurations ensures it remains a reliable choice in niche enterprise environments where compatibility with older systems is essential.
