Xeon Platinum 8124M Details

Designed for enterprise and data center workloads, the Intel Xeon Platinum 8124M is a high-performance server processor built on the Skylake-SP microarchitecture. Released in 2017, it remains relevant in demanding server environments despite its age, thanks to its robust feature set and strong multi-threaded performance. Targeting professional and business-critical applications, this CPU is engineered for reliability, scalability, and high throughput in multi-socket configurations.

The Xeon Platinum 8124M features 18 cores and 36 threads, enabled by Intel's Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) technology, allowing it to handle parallel workloads efficiently. It operates at a base frequency of 3.0 GHz with a turbo frequency of up to 3.5 GHz, ensuring strong performance under sustained load. The processor is manufactured on a 14 nm process and supports DDR4-2666 memory across six channels, delivering a maximum memory bandwidth of 119.21 GB/s. It supports up to 1.5 TB of ECC memory, making it ideal for applications requiring data integrity and fault tolerance.

Cache hierarchy is extensive, with 0.563 MiB of L1 cache (split into 0.281 MiB for data and 0.281 MiB for instructions), 18 MiB of L2 cache, and a 24.75 MiB L3 cache. These levels of cache help maintain low latency during intensive computational tasks. The chip uses the LGA-3647 socket and supports up to 48 PCIe lanes, allowing for high-speed expansion with multiple storage and networking devices. It also supports Intel's Advanced Vector Extensions 512 (AVX-512), providing powerful capabilities for scientific computing, AI inference, and media processing.

In benchmark testing, the Xeon Platinum 8124M achieves an overall score of 5601, placing it at #413 among 2060 processors. Its multicore performance scores 6063, ranking #222, while its single-core performance reaches 5293, ranking #730. These results place it behind some modern desktop and workstation CPUs but ahead of many other server-grade processors. The processor competes closely with other Xeon models like the Xeon E5-2695 v4 and Xeon Silver 4314, and it outperforms older Xeon E5 variants such as the E5-2689 v4 and E5-2697A v4.

The Xeon Platinum 8124M excels in multi-threaded workloads, particularly in data processing and physics simulations, where it ranks highly in Passmark’s data processing and physics compute tests. However, its single-core performance is relatively modest compared to modern consumer CPUs, limiting its suitability for applications that depend heavily on single-threaded speed. The processor includes advanced features such as Intel vPro, Intel VT-x, Intel VT-d, and Intel Trust Execution Technology, enhancing virtualization, security, and manageability in enterprise environments.

As of March 2026, the Xeon Platinum 8124M remains a viable option for businesses requiring reliable, scalable server performance, particularly in virtualization, database management, and high-performance computing clusters. While it is no longer at the forefront of performance, its strong multi-core capabilities, extensive memory support, and server-specific features make it a durable choice for legacy or mid-tier server deployments where cost-effectiveness and compatibility are key priorities.
