Xeon Gold 6240 Details

Built on Intel's Cascade Lake SP microarchitecture at 14 nm, the Xeon Gold 6240 is a server-grade processor designed for high-performance computing environments. Released in 2018, it has been a staple in enterprise workloads for several years, though it now sits well outside the current generation of processors. Despite its age, the Xeon Gold 6240 remains a capable option for data centers and virtualized environments where reliability and multi-threaded performance are critical.

The processor features 18 cores and 36 threads, leveraging simultaneous multithreading to deliver strong performance across parallel tasks. With a base clock speed of 2.6 GHz and a turbo frequency of up to 3.9 GHz, it balances efficiency and performance. The chip is manufactured using a 14 nm CMOS process and includes an L1 cache of 1.125 MiB, 18 MiB of L2 cache, and a substantial 24.75 MiB of L3 cache, all of which contribute to its ability to handle large datasets efficiently.

Equipped with a 150 W TDP and a socket type of LGA-3647, the Xeon Gold 6240 is designed for robust server platforms like the Purley chipset. It supports up to 1,048,576 MiB of DDR4-2933 memory across six channels, enabling a maximum memory bandwidth of 131.13 GiB/s. This makes it suitable for memory-intensive applications such as database management, virtualization, and high-performance computing.

The Xeon Gold 6240 integrates a range of advanced features, including AVX-512, Intel Deep Learning Boost, and support for ECC memory, ensuring data integrity and enhanced performance in AI and machine learning workloads. It also supports Intel vPro technology, VT-x, and VT-d, providing strong virtualization and security capabilities.

In benchmark testing, the Xeon Gold 6240 achieves an overall score of 5365, ranking #578 out of 2060 processors. It scores 5449 in multicore performance, placing it at #415, and a single-core score of 5309, ranking #719. While it is outpaced by modern CPUs like the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX and Core Ultra 9 285K, its performance is competitive with other server-grade processors such as the Xeon W-2140B and Ryzen 7 PRO 4750GE.

As of March 2026, the Xeon Gold 6240 remains a viable option for legacy server systems and workloads that prioritize stability and multi-threaded throughput over cutting-edge single-core performance. Its extensive feature set and robust memory support make it well-suited for enterprise environments where reliability and long-term support are paramount.
