Xeon D-1520 Details

As of March 2026, the Intel Xeon D-1520 remains a niche server processor, originally launched in March 2015. Despite its age, it still holds relevance in low-power, embedded, and small-form-factor server environments due to its 45 W TDP and robust feature set. With a base clock of 2.2 GHz and a turbo boost up to 2.6 GHz, the Xeon D-1520 leverages Intel’s Broadwell-DE microarchitecture built on a 14 nm process. This 4-core, 8-thread design benefits from Hyper-Threading and a 6 MiB L3 cache, making it capable of handling multithreaded workloads efficiently within its thermal envelope.

The processor’s overall benchmark performance places it at rank #1049 of 2060, with a score of 4764. In single-core performance, it achieves a score of 4754, ranking #1109, and in multicore performance, it scores 4779, ranking #873. These results indicate that while the Xeon D-1520 is no longer competitive with modern high-performance CPUs, it holds its own against older-generation desktop and server processors. It outperforms several modern Intel Core i5 and i7 models like the Core i5-6440HQ and Core i7-4810MQ, but trails behind newer Ryzen 5 and Core i7 variants.

The Xeon D-1520 supports ECC memory, a critical feature for mission-critical systems, and operates with DDR4-2133 memory over a dual-channel interface, delivering up to 31.78 GiB/s of memory bandwidth. It also supports advanced instruction sets including AVX and AVX2, enabling optimized performance for scientific and engineering applications. The processor supports Intel’s virtualization technologies—VT-x, VT-d, and EPT—making it suitable for virtualized environments. Additionally, it includes Intel’s Turbo Boost 2.0, Enhanced SpeedStep, and Secure Key technologies, enhancing efficiency and security.

Despite its strong feature set, the Xeon D-1520 lacks integrated graphics, requiring a discrete GPU for display output. This limitation, combined with its age, makes it unsuitable for general consumer use. However, its low power consumption and server-grade reliability make it ideal for edge computing, network appliances, and small-scale data centers. The processor's 14 nm manufacturing process and FC-BGA 1667 package reflect its focus on thermal efficiency and compact design.

In summary, the Xeon D-1520 is a well-rounded server CPU for environments where power efficiency and integrated features are prioritized over raw performance. While it cannot compete with today’s top-tier processors, it remains a viable option for legacy systems, embedded applications, and cost-sensitive server deployments. Its performance, though dated, is still competitive within its segment, especially when compared to older-generation desktop CPUs.
