Core i7-3740QM Details

The Intel Core i7-3740QM, released in September 2012, is a mobile processor built on the Ivy Bridge architecture and represents an older generation of Intel's high-performance lineup. Despite its age, it remains competitive in certain benchmarks, particularly when compared to other processors from the same era. At the time of its launch, the Core i7-3740QM was designed for power users and enthusiasts requiring strong multi-threaded performance in laptops, thanks to its 4-core, 8-thread configuration enabled by Hyper-Threading technology.

Operating at a base frequency of 2.7 GHz with a turbo boost up to 3.7 GHz, the processor delivers solid performance for its time. It features a 22 nm manufacturing process and integrates Intel HD Graphics 4000, which supports up to three displays and offers a maximum frequency of 1.3 GHz. The integrated GPU, while modest by today’s standards, was capable of handling light gaming and multimedia tasks in 2012. The chip also supports DDR3-1333/1600 memory across a dual-channel interface, delivering up to 25.6 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

In terms of performance, the Core i7-3740QM achieves an Overall Score of 4902, placing it at #947 out of 2060 processors in the benchmark database. Its Singlecore Score of 4988 ranks it at #944, while its Multicore Score of 4774 lands it at #881. The processor performs comparably to modern entry-level CPUs such as the Core i3-9100 and Core i7-4800MQ, but trails behind current-generation offerings like the Ryzen 5 2400GE and Core i5-6440HQ. While it holds its own in single-threaded workloads, its multicore performance is notably lower than many newer processors, reflecting its age and the rapid evolution of CPU architecture.

The Core i7-3740QM supports a wide range of advanced features, including AES-NI, AVX, AVX2, and Intel VT-x virtualization, making it suitable for virtualization, encryption, and high-performance computing tasks. It also includes Intel's Enhanced SpeedStep Technology (EIST) and Secure Key, which improve power efficiency and security. With a TDP of 45 W and a BGA 1224 package, it is designed for mobile platforms where thermal constraints are a key consideration.

As of March 2026, the Core i7-3740QM is best suited for legacy systems or users with specific software requirements that benefit from its architecture. While it is no longer competitive with modern CPUs in terms of raw performance, its integrated graphics and power efficiency still make it a viable option for light computing tasks in older laptops. For users seeking a modern upgrade, the current generation of processors offers significantly better performance and features, but the i7-3740QM remains a testament to Intel’s mobile processing capabilities from the early 2010s.
