Ryzen Embedded V1605B Details

The AMD Ryzen Embedded V1605B represents a significant evolution in embedded computing, particularly in balancing performance with power efficiency. Launched in February 2018, this processor is built on AMD's Zen microarchitecture, codenamed Great Horned Owl, and manufactured on a 14 nm process by GlobalFoundries. While now over seven years old, its design still holds relevance in embedded and low-power applications where thermal constraints are critical. The chip is targeted at the embedded market segment, offering a compact 15 W TDP with scalable limits between 12 W and 25 W, making it ideal for fanless systems, industrial automation, and edge computing environments.

At the heart of the V1605B are four CPU cores, augmented by Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), effectively delivering eight threads. This enables the processor to handle multithreaded workloads efficiently, a notable advantage for virtualization and multitasking scenarios. Base clock speeds sit at 2.0 GHz, but with Precision Boost 2, the processor can dynamically scale up to 3.6 GHz under load, providing a substantial performance uplift during intensive tasks. The cache hierarchy includes 0.375 MiB of L1 cache, 2 MiB of L2 cache, and a shared 4 MiB L3 cache, which helps reduce latency and improve data access speeds.

Memory support is provided through a dual-channel DDR4-2400 interface, allowing for a maximum of 32 GB of RAM and a peak memory bandwidth of 35.76 GiB/s. This configuration ensures adequate bandwidth for most embedded workloads while maintaining compatibility with standard memory modules. The processor uses the Socket FP5, a compact and low-profile socket suitable for embedded motherboards. PCIe 3.0 support with up to 16 lanes enables connectivity to high-speed storage and expansion cards, further enhancing its versatility.

One of the standout features of the V1605B is its integrated Radeon Vega 8 GPU, which includes 8 execution units and 512 unified shaders. It can reach a burst frequency of 1.1 GHz and supports up to four displays simultaneously, making it suitable for applications requiring light graphical processing, such as digital signage or thin clients. The GPU also supports modern instruction sets, including AVX and AVX2, which are crucial for accelerating computation-heavy tasks in machine learning, image processing, and scientific simulations.

In benchmark testing, the V1605B achieves a single-core score of 5,165, ranking it #837 out of 2,060 processors, and a multicore score of 4,735, placing it at #925. The overall score of 4,993 positions it at #877 in the broader ranking. While these scores are modest compared to modern high-end CPUs, they reflect the processor's focus on efficiency rather than raw power. It outperforms several Intel Pentium and Core i3 models in both single- and multicore tests, indicating its competitiveness within the embedded and low-power desktop space.

As of March 2026, the Ryzen Embedded V1605B remains a viable option for embedded systems requiring integrated graphics, virtualization support, and low power consumption. Its combination of SMT, modern instruction sets, and robust memory support makes it a solid choice for industrial, medical, and retail applications. However, for users seeking top-tier performance or the latest features like AVX-512 or PCIe 4.0, newer processors would be more appropriate. For its niche, the V1605B continues to deliver reliable, efficient performance.
