A8-3800 Details

The AMD A8-3800, part of the Llano lineup launched in 2011, represents a bygone era of integrated desktop computing. As of early 2026, this processor is over a decade old and sits well outside the modern performance landscape, yet it remains notable for its role in AMD's early foray into combining CPU and GPU functionality on a single die. Designed for mainstream desktops, the A8-3800 was built on the 32 nm process and features a dual-core architecture with four threads, thanks to AMD's Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) support. While the base clock is listed as 1.2 GHz, the processor’s performance metrics reveal a more nuanced picture of its capabilities in today’s benchmarking context.

The A8-3800's integrated graphics, the Radeon HD 6550D, operate at up to 900 MHz and support up to three displays, making it a viable option for basic multimedia and light productivity workloads in its time. However, its integrated GPU is now outdated compared to modern discrete and even integrated graphics solutions. The chip is packaged in a µPGA format and uses the FM1 socket, a design that has long since been phased out. It supports DDR3 memory with a maximum bandwidth of 25.6 GB/s across a dual-channel interface, and can utilize memory speeds up to 1866 MT/s, though these are limited by the age of the platform.

In terms of performance, the A8-3800 scores 4173 overall, placing it at #1712 out of 2060 processors in the Passmark database. Its single-core score of 4028 ranks it #1748, while its multicore score of 4391 places it #1477. While these scores are low compared to today’s standards, they are still competitive with some older Intel and AMD processors from the same era. For instance, it is slightly behind the Core i3-2120 and Core i5-4210M, both of which achieve nearly identical multicore scores, but it trails behind many modern mobile and desktop CPUs. The A8-3800's single-core performance is particularly weak, ranking below most processors launched after 2015.

The processor supports a wide range of instruction sets, including SSE, AVX, AES, and AMD-V, indicating that it was designed with virtualization and multimedia acceleration in mind. However, its 32 nm fabrication process and 65 W TDP (though listed as 4.5 W, likely a mislabeling) make it inefficient by today’s standards. The A8-3800 is best suited for legacy systems, basic office tasks, or educational use where modern performance is not required. As of 2026, it serves more as a historical artifact than a practical choice for new builds, reflecting the rapid evolution of CPU technology over the past 15 years.
