A6-4400M Details

Launched in May 2012, the AMD A6-4400M is a mobile processor from the Trinity lineup, designed for budget and mainstream laptops. Built on a 45 nm process and featuring a 246 mm² die fabricated by GlobalFoundries, it represents a mid-generation refresh in AMD's integrated graphics and low-power computing strategy. Despite its age, the A6-4400M remains a notable example of early integrated APUs, combining dual cores with a powerful GPU for its time. As of early 2026, it is no longer competitive in modern computing benchmarks but still holds relevance in legacy systems and educational demonstrations of older architectures.

The A6-4400M operates at a base frequency of 2.6 GHz and can boost up to 3.2 GHz under load, though actual performance may vary due to thermal and power constraints. It features a locked multiplier, limiting overclocking potential, and runs on a 65 W TDP, making it suitable for thin-and-light laptops. The processor uses a dual-channel DDR3L memory interface, supporting speeds up to 1600 MT/s and up to 16 GB of RAM. With a 1 MB L2 cache and a 12 PCIe 2.0 lanes configuration, it provides decent connectivity for its era. The socket is FCBGA1170, which was common in mobile platforms of that period.

Integrated into the A6-4400M is the Radeon HD 7520G GPU, a variant of the HD 7000 series, capable of driving up to three displays. It runs at a base frequency of 200 MHz and can boost to 850 MHz, supporting features like DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.2. While not powerful by today's standards, this GPU was sufficient for light gaming, HD video playback, and basic multimedia tasks in 2012. The processor also supports a range of instruction sets, including AVX, SSE4.1/4.2, and AES-NI, enabling efficient data processing and encryption tasks.

In benchmark testing, the A6-4400M achieves an overall score of 4133, ranking 1769th out of 2060 CPUs, with a single-core score of 4042 and a multicore score of 4269. Its performance is comparable to older Core 2 Duo and early Core i3 processors, placing it below modern low-power designs but ahead of some early Celeron and Athlon models. The multicore score places it slightly above its direct competitor, the Core i3-350M, but behind most contemporary processors from 2013 onward. Performance in physics and data processing tasks is similarly modest, with scores in the mid-4400 range, indicating limited suitability for demanding applications.

The A6-4400M’s primary strengths lie in its integrated graphics and power efficiency, making it ideal for entry-level laptops and systems where discrete GPUs were not feasible. However, its limited CPU performance and outdated architecture restrict its usefulness in modern computing environments. For users requiring legacy support or running lightweight applications, the A6-4400M remains a viable option, though it is clearly outpaced by current-generation processors. As of February 2026, it serves more as a historical reference point than a practical choice for new builds.
