Pentium Details

The Intel Pentium N4200, part of the Apollo Lake lineup, positions itself as a budget-friendly mobile processor designed for light computing tasks. Released in 2016, it's now over seven years old, placing it firmly in the realm of legacy hardware. Despite its age, the N4200 still holds relevance in low-power systems where efficiency and cost are paramount. With a 6 W TDP, it's ideal for fanless or passively cooled devices such as mini PCs, compact laptops, and embedded systems. Its low power draw ensures minimal heat output and extended battery life, making it suitable for basic productivity and media consumption on portable platforms.

Built on Intel's Goldmont microarchitecture at a 14 nm process, the N4200 features four cores and four threads, enabling modest multitasking capabilities. The base clock speed is 1.1 GHz, with a turbo frequency of 2.5 GHz, allowing for brief performance boosts under load. It includes 2 MiB of L2 cache but lacks an L3 cache, a common trait in low-power designs. The processor supports up to 8 GB of DDR3L or LPDDR3 memory, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 14.9 GB/s, adequate for everyday use but limiting for memory-intensive applications.

The integrated HD Graphics 505 GPU operates at a base frequency of 200 MHz and can boost to 750 MHz, supporting up to three displays simultaneously. While not suitable for gaming or GPU-intensive workloads, it handles 1080p video playback and light multimedia tasks effectively. The processor supports a range of instruction sets, including AVX2, AES-NI, and SSE4.2, providing compatibility with modern software and enhancing encryption and multimedia performance.

In benchmark testing, the N4200 achieves an Overall Score of 4534, placing it at #1252 out of 2060 processors. Its Singlecore Score is 4465 (#1323), and its Multicore Score is 4637 (#1045). These results indicate that while the processor performs adequately for basic tasks, it falls significantly behind contemporary CPUs in both single-threaded and multi-threaded performance. It is outpaced by nearly all modern processors, including older desktop chips like the Core i3-6300, and is far behind today's top-tier CPUs such as the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX, which scores over twice as high.

The N4200's performance is most competitive with low-end processors from the mid-2010s, such as the Pentium G3220T and Athlon 3000G. Its strengths lie in its energy efficiency and low cost, making it a viable option for basic computing needs in environments where performance is not the primary concern. As of March 2026, the N4200 remains a niche product, suitable only for entry-level or legacy systems where power consumption and cost outweigh performance demands.
