FX-8150 Details

As of March 2026, the AMD FX-8150 remains a relic of a bygone era in desktop computing, having been launched in October 2011 as part of AMD's FX lineup. Designed on the Zambezi architecture and fabricated at GlobalFoundries using a 32 nm process, this processor was intended to compete with Intel's high-end offerings of the time. Despite its age, the FX-8150 holds a unique place in history as one of the first consumer CPUs to feature eight cores, albeit with modest single-threaded performance by today's standards. With a base clock of 3.4 GHz and a turbo frequency of 2.8 GHz, it was built for multithreaded workloads, though its efficiency and modern instruction set support lag far behind current technology.

The FX-8150 is a socket AM3+ processor with a TDP of 125 W, requiring substantial cooling solutions due to its power consumption. It supports DDR3-1333/1600 memory in a dual-channel configuration, with a maximum memory capacity of 32 GB and a memory bandwidth of 25.6 GB/s. The processor includes 8 MB of L3 cache, shared across all eight cores, and operates on a 5 GT/s bus speed. It uses the µPGA package and is compatible with AMD 800 and 900 Series chipsets. While it lacks integrated graphics, certain motherboards with compatible chipsets could enable basic display output through the chipset.

In benchmark testing, the FX-8150 achieves an overall score of 5150, placing it at #745 out of 2060 processors in the overall ranking. Its single-core score of 5423 ranks it at #612, and its multicore score of 4740 places it at #917. While these scores are impressive for their time, they now sit well below the performance of modern CPUs. The processor is outpaced by newer models such as the Core i3-10100 and Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G in single-core performance, and by the Ryzen 3 2300X and Core i7-4700MQ in multicore performance. Notably, the FX-8150's multicore performance is significantly weaker compared to its single-core performance, indicating its design prioritized core count over individual thread efficiency.

Technologically, the FX-8150 supports a range of features including SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AVX2, AES, CLMUL, x86-64, and AMD-V. It also includes hardware virtualization support, which enhances virtual machine performance. However, it lacks simultaneous multithreading (SMT) and has an unlocked multiplier, allowing for easy overclocking. The processor's transistor count stands at 1.2 billion, and it features a die area of 315 mm².

In conclusion, the AMD FX-8150 is best suited for legacy systems or niche applications where its eight-core design provides a marginal advantage over older dual- or quad-core processors. While it was once a high-end option, its performance now falls short of modern standards, and it is no longer competitive in mainstream desktop computing. For users seeking a modern upgrade, current-generation CPUs from AMD and Intel offer vastly superior performance and efficiency.
