FX-6300 Details

Built on AMD's Vishera microarchitecture and fabricated on a 22 nm process, the FX-6300 is a desktop processor that was released in October 2012. As of March 2026, it is considered an outdated device, having been superseded by modern architectures and significantly more powerful CPUs. Despite its age, the FX-6300 remains notable for its six cores and unlocked multiplier, which made it a popular choice for overclocking during its time. It is part of AMD's FX lineup and is designed for users seeking multi-threaded performance without integrated graphics, relying instead on a discrete GPU.

The processor operates at a base frequency of 2.7 GHz and can reach a turbo frequency of 3.4 GHz, though it is limited to two cores, with four threads enabled via AMD's Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) technology. It features 8 MB of L3 cache and supports dual-channel DDR3 memory, with a maximum rated speed of 1866 MT/s and a memory bandwidth of 29.9 GB/s. The CPU is packaged in a µPGA socket and uses the FCBGA1023/FCPGA988 interface, with a TDP of 35 W, indicating relatively low power consumption for its era. It supports up to 32 GB of memory across two channels and includes PCIe 2.0 connectivity with up to 16 lanes.

The FX-6300 does not include integrated graphics, but certain motherboards with compatible chipsets can enable this functionality. It supports a range of instruction sets including SSE, AVX, AVX2, AES, and AMD-V, which allow for efficient virtualization and encryption tasks. The processor also supports ECC memory, although this is limited to server-grade platforms and is not available on consumer motherboards.

In benchmark testing, the FX-6300 achieved an overall score of 4579, ranking #1210 out of 2060 processors. Its single-core score of 4516 places it at #1277, while its multicore score of 4673 ranks it #997. These results indicate that while the FX-6300 holds its own in multi-threaded workloads, it is outpaced by modern CPUs in single-threaded performance. It competes closely with other processors from the same generation, such as the FX-8300 and Core i7-2675QM, but falls behind newer offerings like the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Core Ultra 9 285K.

In conclusion, the FX-6300 is best suited for legacy systems or budget builds where integrated graphics are not required and multi-core performance is prioritized over single-thread efficiency. While it is no longer competitive with today’s high-end processors, its unlocked multiplier and solid core count make it a viable option for enthusiasts on a tight budget or for use in older hardware platforms.
