FX-4300 Details

Built on AMD's Vishera microarchitecture at a 32 nm process, the FX-4300 is a desktop processor that was released in October 2012. As of March 2026, it is well over a decade old, placing it firmly in the category of legacy hardware. Despite its age, the FX-4300 remains notable for its four cores and integrated graphics capabilities, which were relatively advanced for its time. The processor is designed for mainstream desktop use and features a socket FCLGA1155, allowing it to be used with a range of motherboards from the 700, 800, and 900 series chipsets. It operates at a base frequency of 3.1 GHz with a turbo frequency of up to 3.46 GHz, and includes a substantial 7.629 MiB of L3 cache. The chip is manufactured by GlobalFoundries and contains 1.2 billion transistors across a 315 mm² die. It has a TDP of 65 W, making it moderately power-efficient for its era, though it requires adequate cooling due to its performance demands.

The FX-4300 supports DDR3 memory with a dual-channel interface, achieving a maximum rated speed of 1866 MT/s and a memory bandwidth of 29.9 GB/s. It supports up to 32 GB of memory across two channels and features a PCIe 2.0 interface with up to 16 lanes. While the processor does not include integrated graphics in its standard configuration, certain motherboards with compatible chipsets can provide this functionality through the HD Graphics 3000 GPU. This GPU operates at a base frequency of 850 MHz and can burst up to 1100 MHz, supporting up to two displays. The processor supports a wide range of instruction sets, including SSE, AVX, AVX2, AES, and AMD-V, enabling it to run modern software and virtualization workloads.

In terms of performance, the FX-4300 scores 4684 overall, placing it at rank #1122 out of 2060 processors in the benchmark database. Its single-core score of 4841 ranks it at #1045, while its multicore score of 4448 places it at #1330. These results indicate that while the FX-4300 is capable in single-threaded applications, its multicore performance lags behind modern processors, particularly in comparison to the top-tier CPUs in the top 50 lists, which include models like the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX and Core Ultra 9 285K. The processor is competitive with older Intel and AMD chips such as the Core i5-5350U and Athlon X4 870K, but it falls behind in both single-core and multicore performance relative to contemporary offerings.

Given its age and performance profile, the FX-4300 is best suited for basic desktop computing, light multimedia tasks, and retro gaming. It may still serve as a viable option in budget systems or for users maintaining legacy hardware. However, it is no longer competitive with modern processors in terms of efficiency, performance, or feature support. As of 2026, the FX-4300 represents a significant step backward in computing performance compared to today's high-end CPUs, making it suitable only for niche use cases or as a secondary system component.
