Cloud Imperium Games has unveiled the long-awaited single-player offshoot Squadron 42 with a new gameplay trailer titled 'The Oath' and the activation of its official Steam page. This confirms that the narrative single-player title from the Star Citizen universe will be released for PC in the second quarter of 2027. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the project, which has been in development for over 14 years after previously being targeted for 2026. The system requirements are ambitious, requiring approximately 150 GB of storage space and a graphics card with at least 8 GB of VRAM.
To provide insight into the current development state, the developers invited 140 selected community members to an exclusive five-hour playthrough event. Participants largely praised the graphical quality, cinematic immersion, and the vibrancy of the world. Specifically, the FPS combat and space battles were described as successful and reminiscent of modern Wing Commander titles. However, the highly linear structure and limited freedom compared to open-world games drew criticism, posing a challenge to expectations regarding gameplay design.
Cloud Imperium Games attributes the release delay from 2026 to 2027 partly to the upcoming launch of GTA 6, aiming to keep the focus on the quality of their own title. Financially, the project remains stable despite declining revenue figures in the previous year, as the community continues to be strongly engaged and a boost is expected due to the new hype surrounding the trailer and Steam presentation. Nevertheless, the scene warns of further delays, as a specific day has not yet been set and the history of postponements in the Star Citizen ecosystem weighs heavily.
The community's reaction to the news is divided. Many fans celebrate the Steam listing as proof that the game's completion is within sight, appreciating the transparency of the recent steps. Skeptics, however, point to the enormous number of development years and draw comparisons to other famous, repeatedly delayed projects in the industry. Thus, Squadron 42 remains one of the most debated games in the industry, whose actual success will be definitively tested in the spring of 2027.
