Microsoft has extended the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10, providing security updates until October 12, 2027. This decision aims to grant users of older Windows 10 systems a necessary transition period to facilitate their migration to Windows 11.
This extension allows users to continue receiving critical security patches for their connected systems. While the ESU program provides essential security updates, it does not offer new features or extended technical support beyond the scope of standard patching. Continued participation requires that affected systems meet certain hardware prerequisites, such as the registration of TPM 2.0 systems.
For private customers, participation in the ESU program is offered for a fee of $30 if they do not have a Microsoft account. Corporate and government customers benefit from extended support options; these groups receive support extending up to October 2028.
This measure underscores Microsoft's commitment to ensuring security for all users while managing the transition to newer operating system versions. The extension thus provides an important buffer for users who are not yet ready to upgrade their hardware to modern standards.
