Intel Coral Rapids: Xeon with up to 320 Cores and Return of SMT Gains Momentum

Intel has strategically realigned its server processor roadmap, placing significant emphasis on its next-next-generation offering, codenamed "Coral Rapids." The company plans not only to advance its microarchitecture but also to reintroduce Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT). This crucial move aims to bridge the gap with AMD’s EPYC processors and re-establish Intel’s competitive foothold in the high-performance computing segment. By bringing back SMT, Coral Rapids will allow multiple threads per core, significantly boosting efficiency for workload-intensive server applications.

Technical specifications for the high-end variant of Coral Rapids suggest impressive scalability. Rumors indicate that the top-tier model will feature up to 320 cores and an expanded 20-channel memory interface. This widening of the memory bus is designed to reduce data transfer bottlenecks, massively boosting performance for data-intensive tasks such as AI inference and large-scale database queries.
